Chained Soldier S2, Episode 12 [END] — Get Your Motor Running!

Mira borrows Yuuki for a ride. The Demon Defense Forces and Thunder Gods prepare for more clashes.

Episode 12 — “Gods Assemble”

Hmm.

Yes, Chained Soldier’s season finale introduced more tantalizing topics than answered questions. The anime needs to build excitement for its third season, right? However, the second season’s last episode did answer one question for me. Yuuki’s subconscious or repressed desires always came out during his reward ritual. Did they have a sexually vindictive streak? Sometimes. But after Kyouka lent him out to several girls, his cravings seemed more obvious. Let’s discuss how subconscious Yuuki’s desires were after he became a bull stud for the Demon Defense Forces.

Yuuki’s Desires Openly Revealed

I love seeing character growth in anime. In Chained Soldier’s first season, the terms of Yuuki’s fantasies or wishes in the reward ritual were unknown. But as the second season unfolded, we saw Yuuki becoming more forthright about his relationships with the girls he spent time with. If Nei wanted to play the doting senpai, then Yuuki would receive headpats. If Ren had fun petting, cuddling, and letting her Shiba Inu dogs lick her all over, Yuuki wanted to share that fun with her cheeks and tongue. Yuuki’s desires were specific to the girl who borrowed him.

The reward mechanism stood out most during his Slave session with Mira. Yuuki recalled how much he would have enjoyed a road trip date. And then Mira gave it to him! Of course, Chained Soldier moved the adult make-out session to the backseat of a rocking jeep, so Yuuki still has more distance to cover to be honest about his sensual desires. However, the enjoyable part here was the progress he had made in visualizing his requests from his chain holders.

Mira Climbs Up the Stairs to Adulthood

Still, Chained Soldier’s season finale raised more questions than answers, even as Mira squeezed a warm, vibrating Yuuki between her thighs. Is the virgin gang leader still a shojo banchou? Yuuki took her first kiss, French kiss, topless groping, and steamed-up windowpane. That Titanic reference implies he did much more than draw her “like one of [his] French girls.” I have questions!

I have one more pressing question — the negative-color Ren Thunder God, Fukuma. What’s the deal with that? The American president keeps calling Ren the “Earth’s Answer” to the Mato. Was Fukuma the question? Vice versa? Chained Soldier blew me away with how it ended the second season after the Yokohama arc. The viewers are itching in a way that only a third season can scratch.

Chained Soldier Makes Me Say Heh.

Last week, Mira asked to borrow Yuuki from Kyouka, but Kyouka warned her not to push herself so hard. The shojo banchou can’t even “reward” Yuuki willingly. Mira will power through! What does Yuuki turn into for Mira? A red motorcycle! That fits Mira’s background and personality. Slave Bakuon — I’d watch that anime if Mira wore a skintight leather racing suit.

Yuuki’s motorcycle form suits Mira’s need for speed, and he can ram through a Shuuki horde. Does he have missiles or other weapons? Oh? Yuuki hints at his reward: a romantic road trip date. Mira is already riding him, so will she ride him again later in the Chained Soldier episode? Bakuon (爆音, ばくおん) means “roar of a machine,” so Yuuki inflicts a sound debuff on enemies. Unsurprising. Mira did the motorcycle maneuver, nodding to Akira. Oho! Yuuki also has a flamethrower in his mouth.

Recall that Kyouka and Mira’s territories face the most Shuuki attacks, which is why the most combat-oriented squadron commanders received those assignments. How much fun did Yuuki and Mira have while patrolling her zone? And how much fun will Yuuki have “patrolling” Mira’s “zones?” Aha. Yuuki fantasized about a road trip date, so here comes the heavy petting in the back seat!

Har. The date began innocently enough. Is this Mira’s first date? Ever? The shojo banchou will graduate from many firsts today. First indirect kiss, first intentional toplessness, first direct kiss, and first… steamy windowpane! Chained Soldier references Titanic. Is Shojo Banchou Mira now only Banchou Mira? Um, how did Yuuki return to his dorm? Did Mira ride him again and reward him again? Or did she merely drive him home in her steamy jeep?

Don’t Touch Me, Chained Soldier!

Next on the epilogue agenda — Aoba and her humanoid Shuuki friends. “Sister-in-law” Tenka is Yuuki’s direct link to his sister. Aoba needed to recharge her “little brother” battery. Tenka and Aoba confirmed that Tenka portaled Aoba to Yokohama after she learned that Kuusetsu could phase through matter. Tenka has also been supplying Aoba’s sanctuary for humanoid Shuuki girls. Yuuki’s sister worries about the Demon Defense Forces still hunting them down. However, Tenka says they’re busy with the Thunder Gods.

Oh? What accidentally sexy situation will Coco and Naon drag Yuuki into? Ah, yes. Yuuki the Masseur. Imagine a whole series like this. Stop, you don’t have to! First up, Naon, then Coco. Yuuki wondered if his connection to Kuusetsu would explain how he knew the girls’ bodies so well. I doubt it, but Coco and Naon enjoyed themselves.

These Meetings Could Have Been an Email

Another squadron commanders’ meeting. Ren is back from kicking energy balls into orbit from Washington, DC. Her requests for sessions with Bell to blow off steam still scare the 2nd Squadron Commander. I hope we see one of these encounters in a future Chained Soldier episode. Yakumo still wishes she could have fought the Shuuki in Yokohama without destroying the city. Kyouka still advocates launching more aggressive operations against the Thunder Gods. However, Ren continues to reply with a slower, conservative strategy. In glacial progress, the Supreme Commander proposed reconnaissance missions.

Meanwhile, at Shikoku’s lair, Jyouryuu misses Kuusetsu’s childish antics. Whoa! The Eight Thunder Gods called a conference meeting, too! Where have they been? This is like the start of Chained Soldier’s second season, when we met the other Demon Defense squadron commanders. Jakuun, younger than Kuusetsu, looks like a droid. Yes, it’s the best shonen exposition device: sitting around talking. Don’t manga writers realize adults hate boardroom business meetings?

Great. These Thunder Gods burst in with flashy, aggressive entrances. Naruhime orders Jyouryuu to stop moping. Are they lightning sisters? I want to slap Jyouryuu’s belly! What the heck is going on here? Why is a negative-color version of Ren among the Thunder Gods? Fukuma’s name (伏摩, ふくま) looks like a combination of bowing (伏, ふせる, fuseru — prostrated, bow) and scraping (摩, まする, masuru — chafe, rub, polish, scrape). Their leader, Taikyoku, came from attending to their ill “Mother.” Chained Soldier began explaining who oversees the demon dimension of the Mato. Taikyoku punishes Shikoku for letting Kuusetsu die.

Chained Soldier Sets the Agenda for a Third Season

The Thunder Gods strategize how best to attack the Demon Defense Forces after they surprised them with their superior teamwork. “Purification Day” is the harbinger of doom for the next season. Rairen, as impatient as Kyouka, wants to take the fight to the enemy immediately. New enemies also feature in the future, such as the Holy Tributes. The Thunder Gods researched human-demon chimeras themselves. Will the humanoid Shuukis, like Aoba, Naon, and Coco, be the answer to beating them? Questions about Mother and how she relates to the Thunder Gods will have answers later. Much later.

Even more sitting around talking in Chained Soldier. The 7th Squadron meets in their dorm. Talking about what we watched others talk about. So much talking! Fast forward to more training with Yuuki and his reward rituals. But remember, Kyouka is Yuuki’s master, and her tsundere remonstrations now sound more endearing than insulting.

Epilogue time for the Chained Soldier season. Hohoho. Ren needed one more petting session for “payback.” Is puppy cuddling all that Bell fears from the Supreme Commander? Yuuki doesn’t mind, but it’s not as satisfying to Ren without a slave collar. She even had one more sexy memory to be angry about.

Aw. Konomi, Bell, and Varvara host the final omake because they had so little screen time all season. The taciturn Russian beauty didn’t even get a voice actor!

Final Thoughts on Chained Soldier S2.

The sophomore season of an anime often makes or breaks its production committee’s commitment to long-term franchise investments. It’s even more unnerving after switching animation studios. But Chained Soldier bet on its mash-up of lewd fan service and winking at sexual fetishes with shonen action conventions by changing from Seven Arcs to Passione. The latter studio is famous for its delicious female character designs. From High School DxD HERO to Ishuzoku Reviewers to Nukitashi, you want Passione in your corner. The animation studio delivered for Chained Soldier in the PLOT and ACTION scenes.

Chained Soldier’s Fan Service Shonen Genre Method

The shonen genre, unfortunately, has a weakness in its long-running serial formula — the middle third is the gacha collector phase. World-building turns into visiting places you’ll never see again, meeting characters you’ll never meet again, and character development resembling a sine wave instead of a straight-line upward trend. Anime adaptations have usually turned manga serials into “monster-of-the-week” arcs.

I see a similar pattern emerging for Chained Soldier. The upside — waifu-of-the-week arcs for Yuuki lent out to sexy Demon Defense Force soldiers! And the Thunder Gods have an interest in him, too, as he’s a sentient male Shuuki in his Slave form. A third season could pack enough fan service to let you grit your teeth through the more annoying aspects of a mature shonen genre anime. Let’s hope so! I would like to see more of those Thunder Gods trying to seduce Yuuki!
