Looking for supernatural scares this Halloween season? Horror Collector premiered October 10, 2026, bringing a popular Japanese children’s horror novel series to television. But will this adaptation stay faithful to its established younger audience, or will it alienate fans as it looks to pull in older horror fans, even in the hands of J-horror veterans?
J-List has not one, but two new offers for you! First, we’re running an 18% sale on all books and magazines, including all hentai manga and doujinshi from Japan, and all sexy JAV photo books. Then, in order to combat the rise of No Nut November, we’re giving you a rare $40 coupon off of $200 or more in awesome onaholes, ero lotion and more. Two ways to save with J-List! Both sales end November 11th.
Horror Collector: Haunting Urban Legends
Based on novels written by Norio Tsuruta (Ring O: Birthday, the prequel to Ring) and Midori Sato, Horror Collector follows Fushigi Senno, a mysterious boy in a red hood who travels from town to town investigating urban legends. Accompanied by Jimmy — the dog-bodied dogsbody — Fushigi confronts supernatural curses and records the legends he encounters in his little red notebook.
Fushigi means “strange” or “mysterious” in Japanese. Because his name is written in hiragana (フシギ) rather than kanji (不思議), its exact meaning is open to your interpretation.
The story also follows Himitsu, Fushigi’s black-hooded twin. She can manifest the supernatural, so I wonder if she has a black notebook that makes people go poof.
The original novel series launched in 2015 and has surpassed one million copies in circulation worldwide. A manga adaptation illustrated by Niko Yūki followed in 2021, and a theater adaptation was staged in Tokyo in May 2023.
Horror Collector: A Children’s Series with Adult Scares?
Although Horror Collector originated as children’s literature, its anime adaptation aims to haunt a wider audience.
At an October 7 NHK press event in Shibuya, producer Jun Sakata explained how the production team worked with the original creators to pack the anime with frights for adult viewers.
The series draws on Japanese urban legends and the fear of encountering bizarre beings in everyday life. Rather than relying solely on conventional monsters, it explores the unsettling possibility that familiar rumors might be true.
Tsuruta, who is considered the “Father of J-horror,” said that when he began writing Horror Collector, Japanese horror was in a poor state because the genre lacked heroic good guys. With the character Fushigi, he wanted to bring the likes of GeGeGeGe no Kitarō, with its titular lead Kitarō, into the twenty-first century. A “Scooby”-centric plot, built around a hero who inevitably wins the day, might be the key to holding old and new audiences.
Meanwhile, Tsuruta also stated that he hopes the Horror Collector anime will pave the way for a future live-action adaptation.
Horror Collector: Release Date, Music, and Production
Horror Collector began broadcasting on NHK General TV in Japan on October 10, with new episodes scheduled for Saturday nights. Studio Palette produces the 12-episode series, with Yūki Inaba directing and handling composition. Kaori Yoshikawa is responsible for character designs, while Masato Kōda composes the music. Singer-songwriter Shikao Suga performs both the opening theme, “Kageboshi” (カゲボウシ, meaning “Silhouette”), and the ending theme.
Crunchyroll began streaming the subtitled series on October 10, with no date yet set for the dubbed version.
If you’re a fan of paranormal anime like Dandadan or J-horror classics like Ring, then give Horror Collector a watch. The first episode is out, if you’re brave enough to keep your eyes open for the scary bits.
Sadako (Ring) has inspired some great memes, and the Ring Teletubby meme is burned into my brain. Do you have a favorite J-horror meme? Post it in the comments.
