It seems that every classic anime is getting a reboot or refresh lately. Urusei Yatsura (2022), Tokyo Mew Mew New, Ranma ½, and THE GHOST IN THE SHELL (2026) have returned familiar worlds to anime screens. They all share one trait: they are new adaptations of their respective classic manga sources. The latest series to follow this trend is Magic Knight Rayearth (2026). The two-cour “refresh” began on October 7. Let’s talk about what it looks like for longtime fans and new viewers!

Magic Knight Rayearth Mixes Maho Shojo with Giant Robots
CLAMP’s Magic Knight Rayearth manga ran in Kodansha’s Nakayoshi from November 1993 to February 1995, blending shojo adventure, other-world fantasy, magical-girl transformation, and giant robot spectacles.
The story rests inside CLAMP’s interconnected universe alongside Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE and xxxHOLiC. My favorite cuddly lifeform in that universe, Mokona Modoki, first appeared in CLAMP’s Magic Knight Rayearth before inspiring the white and black versions of Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE and xxxHOLiC. Yes. That means the enigmatic mascot Mokona will open its wide mouth and “puuu” at you in 2026!
Here’s your refresher synopsis — junior high school girls Hikaru Shidou, Umi Ryuuzaki, and Fuu Hououji meet during a school trip to Tokyo Tower. A desperate summons pulls them into Cephiro, a magical world sustained by human will. Princess Emeraude has been captured, and Cephiro is slipping into chaos. To save the other world, the three girls must become the legendary Magic Knights and awaken armored magical giant robots called Mashin.

Their first quest at the end of Episode 1? Find Mokona!
Magic Knight Rayearth Nostalgia Will Hit You in the Mokonas!
CLAMP fans will feel relief the moment they see a flower in space open to reveal Princess Emeraude’s huge forehead and bigger eyes. The anime industry may have better technology and high-def resolution now, but Magic Knight Rayearth’s shiny eyes and polished crystal gems everywhere still fit.
The production crew promised that their fresh adaptation of CLAMP’s manga series would faithfully render the story. Even material the 1994 anime series couldn’t fit into the original run (the anime aired concurrently with the manga’s release) would make it to the small screen. The first episode gives me hope they will keep that promise.

Besides the look and feel of 1993 Tokyo, Magic Knight Rayearth (2026) will sprinkle nostalgia bombs throughout its two cours. The new anime has new opening and ending themes for its current run, but the ’90s theme songs will appear as insert songs during episodes.

And did I mention Mokona? PUUU!
New Teams Cast Magic on Classic CLAMP Isekai
Thirty years is a long time. Understandably, new actors, studios, and production staff are in charge of the new Magic Knight Rayearth anime. You might recognize some of them!
- Ayane Sakura voices Hikaru Shidou, the genki girl whose directness and courage suit her fire magic.
- Rumi Ookubo voices Umi Ryuuzaki, the cool-beauty fencer associated with water.
- Rie Takahashi voices Fuu Hououji, the closet-gamer archer whose gentle manner complements her wind magic.
- Saori Hayami voices Princess Emeraude, whose summons draw the three girls into Cephiro and begin their quest.
- Mamiko Noto voices Alcyone, the ice sorceress with questionable fashion sense who serves Zagato and confronts the newly summoned Magic Knights.

Yui Umemoto directs Magic Knight Rayearth (2026) at E&H Production. Shigeru Murakoshi handles series composition, Satomi Watanabe provides character designs, and Yuki Kajiura, Takumi Ozawa, and Shiho Terada compose the music. Toaka performs the opening theme, “Otome no Tsurugi,” while Yurina Kawaguchi performs the ending theme, “Hoshiakari.”

Seeing Mokona again after so long has me already looking forward to the second episode. Those who watched the first two episodes at Anime Expo and Otakon this summer had better not spoil anything!
Where to Watch Magic Knight Rayearth
Magic Knight Rayearth premiered in Japan on October 7, 2026. The official broadcast page confirms a two-consecutive-cour run, with Japanese streaming continuing after the television broadcast. Crunchyroll streams the series internationally.

Will You Accept This Quest? ▶ Yes: Magic Knight Rayearth succeeds as a fresh adaptation of CLAMP’s fantasy adventure, giving its heroine trio and magical world renewed energy. Longtime fans can enjoy a faithful return to Cephiro. Meanwhile, the familiar designs and music rekindle warm memories of the 1994 anime. Puuu!
