Long-running franchises usually follow their heroes, not the people cleaning up the mess behind them. A Certain Dark Item (Toaru Anbu no ITEM, とある暗部の少女共棲) does exactly that, training the spotlight on Academy City’s covert operatives instead of the students who normally uncover its conspiracies. The spinoff premiered on October 9, featuring the lovely, and sometimes not-so-lovely, ladies of ITEM before a certain meltdown cut a certain “friend” in half. Were they cute girls doing cute things back then? Eh…

A Certain Dark Item Accepts Academy City’s Dirtiest Jobs
A Certain Dark Item focuses on ITEM, an elite covert unit working inside Academy City’s hidden “Dark Side.” While the city publicly promotes education and esper development, organizations like ITEM handle assignments that never appear in official reports.
The premiere immediately establishes that perspective through an assignment targeting a medical charity conducting inhumane ability-development experiments under the guise of treating incurable illnesses. An esper, protected by an allegedly invincible shield, stands in their way. What an opportunity to see ITEM members combine infiltration, traps, and overwhelming force to complete the mission in A Certain Dark Item.
ITEM Brings Railgun Veterans Back Together
A Certain Dark Item reunites the established ITEM cast, bringing several familiar franchise performers back to Academy City’s underworld:
- Ami Koshimizu as Shizuri Mugino. Academy City’s fourth-ranked Level 5 esper and ITEM’s leader. She solves problems with Meltdowner beams and only occasionally with people skills.
- Aya Suzaki as Rikou Takitsubo. The team’s tracker. If you’re trying to hide from ITEM, she’s the reason that plan won’t work.
- Maaya Uchida as Frenda Seivelun. An explosives specialist whose solution to many tactical problems begins with “What if we blew it up?”
- Chinatsu Akasaki as Saiai Kinuhata. ITEM’s compact defensive powerhouse. The word “small” is best avoided in her presence.
- Hana Hishikawa as Choubi Hanano. A newcomer to the Dark Side whose survival strategy appears to involve staying near the women carrying the heavy weaponry.
Together, the cast portrays ITEM’s combination of powerful abilities and chaotic team chemistry. Choubi Hanano also gives A Certain Dark Item a notable new face alongside the four established ITEM members.
Behind the scenes, A Certain Dark Item brings back several franchise veterans. Tatsuyuki Nagai directs the anime at J.C.STAFF, with Shougo Yasukawa handling series composition. Shigeki Kimoto designs the characters, while Maiko Iuchi returns to Academy City’s soundscape as composer. Together, they give Dark Item strong continuity with earlier Index and Railgun anime projects.
The opening theme, “Ghost Sequence” by East Of Eden, and the ending theme, “Genshi Kuzushi” by Kishida Kyoudan & THE Akeboshi Rockets, complete the launch package.
The Spotlight Turns Toward Academy City’s Dark Side
Most entries in the franchise reveal Academy City’s secrets through protagonists investigating mysteries from the outside.
Touma Kamijou investigates strange incidents. Mikoto Misaka uncovers conspiracies. Accelerator navigates the city’s underworld from a different angle.
This time, the series shines the searchlight the other way. A Certain Dark Item begins from the opposite direction.
Instead of discovering corruption, ITEM already works within the system. The team receives assignment briefings and resolves problems officials would rather keep hidden. That perspective distinguishes A Certain Dark Item from most franchise entries. The anime’s premiere quickly established how the ITEM girls display no curiosity about their assigned targets.
But each member is a “good girl” in their own way, understanding how their jobs affect the people in their daily lives. For example, Mugino realized the target of her current assignment had already started scamming students at her school. That added extra motivation to ITEM’s role as Academy City’s sweepers. They take out the trash, and (most of the time) the trash deserves it.
Fun things to watch out for: cameos. Lots and lots of cameos of our favorite Index franchise characters before they hit it “big.” You know what I mean!
