Himari faces off against Fubuki in a showdown during the Azuma Banquet.
Episode 6 — “A New Azuma”
Hmm.
The bulk of this Chained Soldier episode centered around Himari’s relationship with the Azuma family compared to her found family, the 7th Squadron. The scenes of Fubuki with Yuuki and Himari entertained, especially when the mother instructed the daughter on full-press kissing. However, the anime employed an effective narrative device by interspersing the Azuma Banquet events with scenes of the Eight Thunder Gods at home. Three items stood out that set the table for the next story arc in Chained Soldier. Let’s talk about them!

Continuity in Chained Soldier — Reminders and Foreshadowing
Last week, the Azuma Banquet reached an inflection point after Himari beat up her childhood bully, leaving the main branch members to fight over leadership. Instead of immediately picking up from when Fubuki caught her daughter sucking tongues with Yuuki, Chained Soldier presented the newest Eight Thunder God, Kuusetsu, playing with Shikoku’s hair. Why was this noteworthy?

First, the second season has spent most of its time playing with the other Demon Defense Force squadrons. That’s fine for deeper exploration of world-building, politics, and seeing nude bodies from squadrons beyond the 6th and 7th. However, the girls reside in the Mato to fight demons. And learning about the enemies they must confront in the closing chapters moves the story forward. We hadn’t seen what the vagina egg hatched after Chained Soldier’s second season started, so Kuusetsu and her mercurial personality appeared at the right time.
Second, the Eight Thunder Gods’ conversation about Shikoku’s partial success in infiltrating the 7th Squadron’s dormitory featured an insight about humans in Chained Soldier. Emotional energy drives evolution and leveling up. That tidbit foreshadowed Himari unleashing a new form. I’m not a fan of the Shouty McShouterson school of fighting, but old-school anime fans welcome any Dragon Ball and Super Saiyan references.

And third, we learned the fate of Aoba’s friends, Naon and Coco. Last season, Shikoku offered them as meals to Kuusetsu’s egg, but this Chained Soldier episode showed us the purpose. Kuusetsu absorbs Shuukis’ powers with the side effect of retaining their personalities. Naon could phase through physical material, and she maintained her beauty aesthetics from her modeling days. Kuusetsu slipped out of Jyouryuu’s body and complained about ugly prey. The audience saw Naon’s influence without explicit dialogue through showing, not telling.
Caution — Slippery When Wet
Chained Soldier sticks to proven fiction writing methods. Those few seconds plant vivid images and ideas inside the viewer’s head, such as Naon’s location, asking if we’ll see Coco again, and whether they can return if Kuusetsu has their character traits.
I’ll watch out for Kuusetsu dripping slippery healing fluid and licking toes in future episodes.
Chained Soldier Makes Me Say Heh.

Hey, I recognize these people. The youngest of the Eight Thunder Gods, Kuusetsu, behaves like a spoiled brat around permissive parents. Who thought Shikoku would let others treat her snake hair like that? Kuusetsu claims she’s trying to cheer up Shikoku after Shushu and Tenka drove her “big sister” away from Yuuki. The Eight Thunder Gods’ leader warns the others about humans’ surprising power-ups when they get emotional. Foreshadowing for Chained Soldier?

Kuusetsu’s overbearing attitude puts her big sisters through a lot. They wonder if the Shuuki she ate affects her personality, besides adding to her abilities. Shikoku mentions they need only one more god to complete the Eight Thunder Gods’ ranks. Does she mean Aoba? How many have they fed to Kuusetsu? Three already? Poor Shikoku, Rairen, and Jyouryuu. Such misfortune. Their youngest member is a handful.
The Azuma Banquet Is All Meat and Dairy
Continuing from the last Chained Soldier episode, Fubuki insists on giving Himari pointers on satisfying her partner. Boob pressure is essential! Oyakodon is on the menu, boys! Thank you for the jazz saxophone in the background music.
Back to the issue at hand — Tobera expected little from branch family members, barely even appetizers for the Azuma Banquet. How will the three daughters fare against their mother, Fubuki? Finally! We’ve seen Fubuki’s spear skills in the opening and ending credits for Chained Soldier S2, but this is the first time we see her pole skills in an episode. Was it any surprise that a MILF would prefer putting both hands on a poleax?

Fubuki has wielded her lance for years, so don’t expect Himari and Yuuki to stand a chance against her because they’ve only been tongue-wrestling for a few months. Hahaha! Fubuki’s mastery in extending her lance means she’s adept at making other poles grow. Those instant erections could poke an eye out! Can Himari stand toe-to-toe with her mother without Yuuki’s help? We should remember that Chained Soldier occupies a world of paranormal activity, so expecting Fubuki’s lance only to have an extension function is naive. She can block missile barrages! Oof. Fubuki used only 10 percent of her power against Himari.
Chained Soldier Serves Piping Hot Family Issues

Uh oh. Yachiho would have helped Himari against their mother, but their oldest sister, Maia, stopped her. Maia uses huge, invisible hands for everything, and Himari can’t freeze time without striking chuunibyou poses. Fubuki can even block fists when she draws her lance. Is the battle over for Himari? Nope! Fubuki made a mistake in impugning Kyouka’s judgment for choosing Himari as her second-in-command. Humans have emotional power-ups in Chained Soldier. Even Shikoku, an intelligent Shuuki, knows that. Flashback. Kyouka appointed Himari as her Number Two, and they shed happy tears of newfound sisterhood. Here comes an emotional power-up, a la Super Saiyan mode. Now, Himari is angry and demands that Fubuki retract her words!
Chains selectively cover Fubuki’s modesty in the intermission card.

Fubuki replies to Himari’s demand, “Make me.” Okay, but she’ll do it while emulating Yakumo, Tenka, Homare, and Yachiho. What about that? Fubuki took back what she said about Kyouka, and that defused Himari’s new power mode. Maia patted Yachiho’s head, advising her little sister to care more about herself than about protecting Himari. Fubuki became the new Azuma Head after they conceded.
Does Chained Soldier Got Milk? Grandma Craves Babies!
Let’s check in with the four Eight Thunder Gods that somehow knew there should be eight of them. Oh no! Shikoku discovered Street Fighter! Ooh, so that’s how that works. Kuusetsu just popped out of Jyouryuu, using Naon’s material phasing skill. She eats other demons to use their abilities and takes on their personalities! Naon was Aoba’s friend who had a complex about beautiful things and people. The wait for “creating” an eighth thunder god is boring to Kuusetsu, so Shikoku has a suggestion. Chained Soldier makes the audience wait, now. I hope it’s not boring!

Okay, I forgive you, Chained Soldier, because Homare is buck naked as Tobera heals her injuries. Yuuki is proud of Himari for using Yakumo and Tenka’s psychic powers, but Himari says she can’t summon them anymore. Have you tried turning blue again, Himari? Have you tried that? Yachiho’s choreography lessons won’t help. Grandma Tobera is proud of her, too, but she needs Himari to give her babies. With him! Who “him?” That “him” with the tongue action!

Uh oh. Fubuki acts like she’s already in charge of the Azuma house, telling her mother to be quiet. Never a moment of familial peace in Chained Soldier. Tobera’s philosophy of fostering competition in everything caused resentment and conflict among the relatives. Fubuki even criticized her mother’s fashion choice! Grow up and ditch the sailor school uniform! Note to self: “Stay on Fubuki’s good side.” One final test from the outgoing Azuma Family Head. Fubuki will “retrain” the branch family members in a new spirit of “getting along.” Lovingly, of course.
Preparing Chained Soldier’s Next Meal

Epilogue time. Kuusetsu is on a mission to play with people in the real world. Good luck, Japan. Plus, the omake features Fubuki proudly flaunting her cow print bikini to her younger daughters, much to their dismay.
Chained Soldier (魔都精兵のスレイブ, Mato Seihei no Slave) streams on Hidive in Japanese audio and English subtitles.
Were you surprised that Fubuki knew how to grip long poles? Not me! And that she can lengthen shafts instantly? Himari, Yachiho, and Maia’s father must be an insanely happy man. Do you think Maia is Fubuki’s best student? Or one of the other sisters? Share your preference in the comments!
