Blended families, the recent euphemism for stepfamilies, has been fodder for romantic comedies, fanservice drama, and (of course) hentai. “Otaku of culture” have expectations after they hear about sexy strangers home alone suddenly with a self-insert quiet boy. Comedies like Kiss × Sis and dramas like Domestic Girlfriend push sex and fanservice into a ready audience’s face. Where does the new anime Days with My Stepsister fit into the stepsibling genre? Is it an erotic trainwreck or a titillating farce? Neither. The drama shows two teenagers with trust issues slowly bonding as brother and sister.
Your Friend in Japan had high hopes that a gyaru stepsister would be this summer’s fanservice machine. But Saki Ayase (Yuki Nakashima, Yuuki Otokura from THE iDOLM@STER Cinderella Girls) is a gyaru in name only. And Days with My Stepsister (Gimai Seikatsu) is a talk-heavy seinen slice-of-life coming-of-age drama. The story’s overarching theme asserts that family forms in the peaceful, still moments spent together. The anime works best as a character study of the two costars, as Yuuta Asamura (Kouhei Amasaki, Masachika Kuze from Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian) learns how to live with women after he and his dad had inhabited a bachelor pad for so long.
Gyaru Fashion as Armor in Days with My Stepsister
Saki is not a stereotypical gyaru, but she uses the character type’s reputation to keep boys and potential friends at arm’s length. Rumors of her compensating dating activities caused an embarrassing misunderstanding for Yuuta when Saki asked him about finding a part-time job. She took that moment as a jumping point to explain how working women, like her bartender mother, Akiko Ayase (Reina Ueda, Rena Natsukawa from Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable!), dress for their occupations. Akiko uses her looks to attract attention and customer service. It’s a mystery how Yuuta’s father, Taichi Asamura (Chikahiro Kobayashi, Ranga from That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime), caught Akiko’s eye to end up marrying her. But the dad-joke generator must have his charms.
Family is More than Transactional
Days with My Stepsister captures the small moments of strangers learning to live together. Things like managing bathwater temperature, where the light switches are, and using traditional Japanese greetings in the home. The anime also explores issues of trust from people carrying psychic wounds from how their respective families separated. Saki insists on trading favors with her stepbrother for “extra” things he does for her. But a common theme in anime is how close people are because they can show anger or argue. How does a sister pay a brother back for scolding her about crossing a street safely?
Yuuta carries his own issues, which Days with My Stepsister will slowly reveal to the audience. The most prominent is how he still remembers his childhood friend, but we can predict the cute playmate has already reentered his life. Yuuta’s playful relationship with his college-aged coworker, Shiori Yomiuri (Minori Suzuki, Liko from Pokémon), will also add a sense of competition for Saki.
Studio DEEN animates the light novel adaptation of Days with My Stepsister, which streams on Crunchyroll in Japanese audio and multiple language subtitles.
