Why Do We Want Realistic Male Main Characters in Our Anime?
We’ve all been frustrated by harem anime in which an incredibly dense main character is surrounded by girls who love him…but he’s too dumb to notice. Or if he does start dating one of the girls, the idea of doing anything sexy with her is completely out of mind. This creates comical situations as the girl is forced to take the lead herself.
Here are some anime character traits we all hate:
- Master Of Misunderstandings MC. There’s nothing more annoying than a character who’s uniquely qualified at misunderstanding the social cues of everyone around him.
- The Self-Deprecating Doormat. Humility is seen as a good trait in Japan, but a wimp-ass male character who can’t bring himself to pursue the girl he likes romantically is a big turnoff for many fans.
- Super Virgin MC. The worst offender in my book is Kazuya from Rent a Girlfriend. Put him in any kind of remotely intimate situation, and his reaction is always the same: “W- What are you saying!?” Dude, you’re a university student. Grow the hell up.
The reality is that human beings will generally have as much sex as they can, especially during their prime. The idea that the most awkward, passive, and asexual guys would somehow attract not just one but multiple love interests without taking steps to pursue them is beyond ridiculous. Of course, anime is built on established tropes, and I get that certain storytelling conventions need to be followed to respect the genre. But it can be frustrating to watch yet another weaksauce anime protagonist who could never get lucky with a girl, which is why it’s sometimes nice to have main characters who actually get some.
Who Are the Best Anime Main Characters Who Actually Have Sex?
Let’s look at our picks for the best, most realistic anime main characters who actively pursue the target of their love to its natural conclusion.
Rudeus Greyrat from Mushoku Tensei
One of the most flawed characters in anime, Rudy, is reincarnated into a fantasy world where he’s given a second chance to apply himself to life. He’s a natural pervert, just like many of us. The first thing he does when learning magic is to create a wind that exposes his teacher’s panties.
Izumi Miyamura from Horimiya
One of the sweetest dere-dere romance anime series you can find is Horimiya, about the super cool but socially awkward Izumi Miyamura, who starts dating his classmate Hori. When they finally have sex, she literally marks him to make sure no other girl can steal him from her.
Yuuji Kazami from Grisaia
One of the most badass anime main characters, hands down, is Yuuji from the excellent Grisaia anime and visual novel series. At a young age he learned assassin skills from his mentor Asako, who also schooled him in the sexual arts. I loved the scene where Asako orders Yuuji to take Yuria’s virginity and teach her about sex, too.
Kei Kusanagi from Onegai☆Teacher
One anime that really blew our minds when it arrived was Please Teacher, the story of a high school boy who witnesses a mysterious woman and a UFO. The mysterious alien becomes his teacher and later his wife.
Natsuo from Domestic Girlfriend
I love fun anime like Domestic Girlfriend, about a boy named Natsuo who has sex with a random girl, and then later finds out she’s his new stepsister. And the girl’s older sister is Natsuo’s teacher who he’s in love with. Not only is he bold enough to have sex with both girls, but he even inserts a suppository into his sister’s butt when she gets a fever.
Kosuda from Yamada’s First Time
Although most of the time he’s reacting to Yamada’s antics, Kosuda is a solid character who shows a constant interest in having sex with his new girlfriend. It’s a great anime if you want to hear Nanoha’s voice actress obsess about losing her virginity.
Michio from Isekai Meikyuu de Harem Wo
One of the most impressive depictions of on-screen sex in the history of anime is Harem in the Labyrinth of Another World, about a boy who gets isekai’ed and builds a harem of happy, willing slave girls. Because anime! The level of detail Studio Pasionne put into the project was impressive.
Makoto from School Days
Yes, Makoto is the anime MC everyone loves to hate. But it’s undeniable that he had the drive to seek out sex with Kotonoha. And when she proved too shy to accept his advances, Sekai was happy to step in and have “practice” sex with him. Makoto is a lot less of a jerk in the visual novel, which has 21 unique endings, so they didn’t have to shoehorn every girl into a single story.
Kintarou from Golden Boy
An amazing anime about a boy who travels around Japan doing various part-time work and having sexual adventures along the way. When this anime aired back in 1995, fans had no idea an anime could tackle sexual themes in such a direct way. This show officially launched the “ecchi” genre, and the world has never been the same since.
Honorable Mention: Keita from KISSxSIS
Finally, we have Keita from the outstanding KISSxSIS. A boy living with two horny not-related-by-blood older sisters is a pretty good setup for sexy moments, but because it’s an ecchi genre show, they can’t officially cross the line. At least Keita isn’t a wimpy MC, running away from his sisters’ advances, and he often takes the lead with them sexually.
