Are You a Landmine, Chihara-san? — New PV Reveals January 2027 Premiere for Scary Girl Romcom Anime

I’ll be honest right from the jump: I like romcom series where the female lead isn’t some pretty, perfect girl. I also like scary girls. Are You a Landmine, Chihara-san?
(Jirai Nandesuka? Chihara-san) has such a scary girl who needs a real friend. “Landmine” here refers to a girl who isn’t what she appears to be and could blow up at some point. Well, Mai’s not scary to you or me, but she scares people with normal Japanese sensibilities. I mean, who doesn’t like cute girls with black hair, red eyes, and a shy demeanor that creates an intimidating air of mystery?

The two new friends and an as-yet-unseen friend are as follows:

Mai Chihara — Sayumi Suzushiro (Nijika Ijichi from Bocchi the Rock!). Mai is a creepy yet kind girl.
Kuroki — Kazuki Ura (Osamu Rojihara from Yu-Gi-Oh! Sevens). Kuroki is a plain-looking guy who befriends Mai.
Chinatsu Iwakura — Maaya Uchida (Kaguya Yamai from Date A Live). Chinatsu is Mai’s stylish and cheerful friend.

Mai will befriend Kuroki sometime in January 2027. Studio SynergySP is responsible for the anime adaptation, with Yasuaki Fujii as director. Keiichirō Ōchi writes the series, Majiro designs the characters, and Arisa Okehazama provides the music.

Are You a Landmine, Chihara-san? Please Don’t Blow Up Yet

Apparently, a “landmine girl” is an actual saying in Japan. Anime, as always, continues to teach Western weebs about Japanese culture. It also always delivers on some rare waifu archetypes we haven’t seen in a while. Mai is the cute, creepy girl with colored contacts and a sense of style only the male lead and cultured readers can appreciate. When was the last time we got to see that? It feels like ages.

Kuroki is just a plain guy who’s nice to the girl everyone avoids like the plague. He’s funny, though. Mai gives him her contact information, and he mixes up his thoughts and speech in one scene. He also has a glasses fetish, which makes him one of us. I look forward to seeing their first meeting and Mai’s various plans to become a more open person and make more friends. I also want to see her various stylish outfits. The manga chapters have her in different outfits on the title page, and the anime had better keep that tradition.

It’s the start of a new semester, and high school junior Kuroki finds himself seated beside the girl everyone whispers about: Mai Chihara. With her gothic fashion, jet-black hair, and intense stare, Chihara is said to be a “landmine” girl or jirai-kei, the hyper-feminine, dark aesthetic often associated with yandere tendencies and unstable personalities. But when Kuroki accidentally draws Chihara’s attention, he discovers she isn’t nearly as unstable as people claim. Beneath the intimidating aura is a surprisingly sweet girl… if a little weird.

Hesitantly, Kuroki begins to learn more about Chihara and her strange quirks. Is there more to her than her volatile reputation? Or is all the dark clothing just a red flag in disguise?

Ryon released the original Are You a Landmine, Chihara-san? manga series on June 25th, 2021. Ichijinsha published nine volumes in Ganma!.
