Five years is plenty of time to misplace your detective notes and wonder whether the key witness still owns that maid outfit. The Detective Is Already Dead (Tantei wa Mou, Shindeiru. Season 2, Tanmoshi) returns on October 7, 2026, after its previously announced July window shifted to fall. The new season resumes the young assistant’s mystery through the legendary detective’s legacy. The returning creative team is ready to recover the detective. Case reopened.

The Detective Is Already Dead Returns to Siesta’s Last Mystery
The Detective Is Already Dead follows Kimihiko, a student whose talent for finding trouble led him to become Siesta’s assistant, the self-proclaimed Ace Detective. They spent three years traveling and fighting the world-threatening organization SPES before Siesta died. One year later, Nagisa Natsunagi pulled Kimihiko back into detective work alongside idol Yui Saikawa and Siesta’s disciple, Charlotte Arisaka Anderson.

Season 2 begins with the group confronting what it means to inherit Siesta’s will. The official Episode 1 synopsis (an advance screening of the first two episodes happened in Tokyo on September 6) sends them toward Siesta’s grave, where a recording about her death and an impossible maid-clad appearance reopen the central mystery. The promotional campaign describes this sequel as the long road toward “recovering the detective.” That phrase gives the new story an emotional target while keeping the mechanics under lock and key.
Reassembled Cast and Production Team
The Detective Is Already Dead brings its principal performers back to the investigation. The sequel also introduces two more Tuners — rare superhuman individuals whose abilities and identities are tied to specific archetypal roles — to its supernatural case file.

- Arata Nagai — Kimihiko Kimizuka
- Saki Miyashita — Siesta and Noches
- Ayana Taketatsu — Nagisa Natsunagi
- Kanon Takao — Yui Saikawa
- Saho Shirasu — Charlotte Arisaka Anderson
- Akari Komiyama — Mia Whitlock, the Priestess
- Nobuhiko Okamoto — Scarlet, the Vampire
The returning production team gives The Detective Is Already Dead a familiar creative foundation after its extended absence.
- Studio — ENGI
- Director — Manabu Kurihara
- Series composition — Deko Akao
- Character design — Yousuke Itou
- Music — Yuuyu and 40mP
- Opening theme — “Kono Shinzou ni Hanataba o” by Koume
- Ending theme — “Hakuchuumu” by Kagura Nana
The third promotional video previews both theme songs and the new Tuners. Miyashita’s dual role as Siesta and Noches adds another mystery that the episodes can explain — preferably before Kimihiko needs another message from beyond the grave.
Can a Second Season Solve the Five-Year Hiatus?
The Detective Is Already Dead finished its first season in September 2021, making this return a test of audience memory as much as detective skill. Blue Exorcist provides a sharp comparison: almost six years separated its 2011 first season from 2017’s Kyoto Saga. Another seven years passed before the Shimane Illuminati Saga arrived in January 2024, extending the wait between sequels. Rin Okumura’s return still revived the conversation around the series. That precedent gives Siesta’s five-year absence some useful case history.

This sequel keeps its director, series writer, character designer, studio, and principal cast. That continuity should ease viewers back into The Detective Is Already Dead after five years away. The challenge comes from the story’s dense mythology: SPES, Tuners, inherited roles, and Siesta’s complicated condition all demand fresh mental filing labels. A focused opening recap can turn five years of distance into renewed curiosity.

Familiarity may split audience reception. Existing fans have waited long enough to treat Siesta’s return imagery as a major event, while newcomers may need Season 1 or the original J-List overview before opening this case file. Clear explanations of the season’s immediate objective can help the character chemistry turn five years of distance into renewed suspense.
Where to Watch The Detective Is Already Dead Season 2

The Detective Is Already Dead Season 2 premieres October 7 on AT-X, d Anime Store, TOKYO MX, and BS Nippon TV in Japan. Crunchyroll will stream the series internationally on October 7, although the exact simulcast release time remains unconfirmed. A dub is in production, while its schedule and languages remain unconfirmed.
Final deduction: Returning staff and cast give this five-year comeback a stable foundation, while the new Tuners and Siesta mystery supply a reason to reopen the case.
Will the long wait make Siesta’s return hit harder? Which mystery should Season 2 explain first? Let us know in the comments!
