Why Does It Matter?
The announcement of Rent-a-Girlfriend Season 4 triggers a surge of hate and vitriol typically hurled at the anime. That hate is something I never understood. I agree with those who say that Kazuya can be a creep. However, the laments of those who say that the series is unbelievable because the girls liking Kazuya would never happen in real life. In fact, I’d argue they show a dangerous detachment from reality. I can name a long list of everything from war criminals to serial killers to kingpins with loving families and spouses. Even Richard Ramirez and El Chapo married after people knew what they were up to. By comparison, Kazuya is a 10/10, and plenty of people would happily accept someone like him.
In our increasingly polarized world, people won’t readily admit it. But fans of the series view it as a mundane fact. We get to enjoy laughable pervy moments, and that’s a win. Many of us might not empathize with or relate to Kazuya. But I don’t relate to several anime characters and still adore their shows. Fans will laugh at it, eagerly wait for it, and enjoy it despite the blowback against it. They’ll love it!

What’s Kanojo, Okarishimasu About?
When Kazuya Kinoshita suffers his major first heartbreak, he turns to compensated dating to get a reprieve from the loneliness. Through that service, he meets the charismatic and perfect girlfriend candidate, Chizuru Mizuhara. But after a perfect date, he grows increasingly upset that it was all a farce and leaves a negative review on her work profile. But when she confronts him about it, a peculiarity of fate forces the two to begin a dating charade to placate their grandparents. As they push themselves to interact and maintain appearances, their “fake” relationship steadily transforms into something more genuine.
