It feels way longer than nine months, or so, since Project Carbuncle introduced us to the anime portion of their mixed-media project. This project includes a video game that uses the typical “Web3” and “blockchain” buzzwords. The Dark Machine the Animation anime looks good, though. Giant robots, some cute waifus who know how to wield said giant robots, and a potential dystopian future.

Dark Machine the Animation News, Cast, Staff
Kairi and Rudora will meet in a fateful encounter sometime in October 2026. Studio Production +h. animates the anime adaptation, with Kazumi Terada as director and Gorō Taniguchi as producer. Team Carbuncle, consisting of Takaaki Suzuki, Tatsuhiko Urata, Atsuo Ishino, and Satohito Sata, will write the series. Kō Yoshinari and Akira Mitani design the characters, and Sugizo provides the action-packed anime music. BUCK-TICK performs the opening theme song “Sonzai Riyū Kai” (Reason to Live, Renewed).
Three of our fearless mecha pilots are as follows:
- Kairi — Kensho Ono (Giorno Giovanna from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure). Kairi is a mecha pilot who searches for the greatest player in the league.
- Rudora — Miyuki Sawashiro (Raiden Shogun/Raiden Ei from Genshin Impact). Rudora is the founder and leader of Team Carbuncle.
- Bran — Riho Sugiyama (Yoko Araki from Code Geass: Rozé of the Recapture). Bran is a level-headed member of Team Carbuncle.

Fighting for Glory in the Arena with Dark Machine the Animation
To start with, I don’t know how the mech battles happen. The story says these mechs mined Palmer crystals, and then they showed up in underground fights. Simple enough, right? But we see the main characters sitting at computers during their own fights. Either they turned these underground battles into a computer-based esport, or the characters control their mechs remotely from computers. Gundam pilots never got that perk, did they?
The battle mechanics aside, this does look really cool. We’re looking at a post-apocalyptic series, given how the buildings are partially underwater. The main characters eke out a living playing this Dark Machine mech combat game, another fun aspect. Let’s game at the end of the world! I really want to know why Rudora’s hair glows. I guess there’s a magic system at play.

The year is 2079.
Humankind is living in an energy bubble after Dr. Robert Palmer discovered the Palmer crystal to give humankind all of the energy it would ever need and more. Unfortunately, not all of humankind has benefited from this hyper energy source and underground battles for this energy have developed at a global scale. The factory robots that have been helping to cultivate this energy of the future have been transformed to fighting mechs by these undergrounds and they are fighting for huge stakes.
However, dark energy is said to reside in small quantities in the Palmer crystal. The use of hyper AI technologies was used in an attempt to harness this dark energy and use it for battle advantages. It is currently unclear whether this dark energy can be controlled by mechs…
Project Carbuncle and Keiichi Yano created the original Dark Machine mixed-media project. Gorō Taniguchi and Hidetaka Tenjin developed the video game adaptation.
