The runup to Easter is a fitting time to think about worshipping a gorilla god. Think of the chocolate bananas! Coconut palms instead of crucifixes. Annoyed teens drenched in makeup exclaiming, “Oh my ape!” instead of the hackneyed alternative. So, get down on your creaky knees and praise the Great Ape because The Gorilla God’s Go-To Girl is here to evangelize our brachiating cousin! And love triangles.
The Gorilla God’s Go-To Girl (or the overly descriptive Gorira no Kami Kara Kago Sareta Reijō wa Ōritsu Kishidan de Kawaiigareru in Japanese) is a shojo romcom about redheaded Sophia Reeler’s adventures after a gorilla god made her the chosen one. Will she live an unremarkable life, or will her knuckle-dragging draw the attention of the ikemen (handsome) royal knights? It’s all in the title!

Clearly, GG is pimping Sophia off to up his heavenly rep.
Neil Gaiman explored the idea of a god’s power depending on the size of their following (American Gods). If Neil’s supposition is true, then the gorilla god must have been on a low ebb when he recruited Sophia. Sophia didn’t expect to become an ape cleric, and GG hadn’t been recruiting for a while.

Nah, I suspect this gorilla genesis is a divine PR campaign to extort bananas from monkey sympathizers through organized religion. A banana tithe. Sophia is a redheaded head-turner, so the propaganda apes figured the knight boys would notice her. GG set Sophia up for maximum impact so Sophia will impress the royal recruits with her gorilla-powered athleticism. Teenage boys do love hot women hitting things. They’ll throw all their bananas her way.

If you’re not sure guys like girls who beat their chests and quaff banana smoothies, then know this. That’s the point.
Sophia is an underdog. She’s the Beauty and the Beast.

The Gorilla God’s Go-To Girl is something like a hairier version of Stan Lee and John Buscema’s She-Hulk. Sophia and Jennifer Walters (a.k.a. She-Hulk) are both capable women, and neither is what you’d expect from cover models. But they’re still crushing it in the looks department. And I said “looks,” not “death by snu snu.” But yes, that too.

The Gorilla God’s Go-To Girl isn’t an isekai or an idol show. But it is wacky in a Looney Toons sort of way. I enjoyed watching my daughter watching this anime and being blown away by reluctant Sophia beating all the boys. The Gorilla God’s Go-To Girl is generally good, wholesome fun.
Fumitoshi Oizaki (character designer of Sgt. Frog) directs The Gorilla God’s Go-To Girl. Kachigarasu produces the anime. The Gorilla God’s Go-To Girl started as a web novel series and added a six-volume manga run. But you knew that from the title, smarty pants!
The Gorilla God’s Go-To Girl scores a Chibi Megumi rating of four. We’ll have to see if it can hold onto that accolade over the next few episodes. I think it will. You can watch The Gorilla God’s Go-To Girl on Crunchyroll.
