There’s so much news coming out of AX that it’s dizzying. But by far, what made me the happiest was Crunchyroll announcing that Sumiko Arai’s yuri manga, The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy at All, is getting a TV anime! And it’s already generating waves of excitement since Dave Grohl announced (via a video message) that Nirvana’s song “Breed” will be the anime’s opening song. Seems even Aniplex couldn’t muster the money to license a song by the best band Dave’s been in.

The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy at All — Synopsis and Details
Aya Oosawa may look like a gyaru, but far from enjoying pop, she loves old-school rock. But there’s something she loves more than music — the laid-back ikemen that mans the cash register at her favorite record shop. After all, how can she not love him? He’s a hunk, has impeccable taste in music, and radiates “always calm” vibes. Aya’s infatuation is so great that she even gushes about him at school! But there’s a slight issue with Aya’s newfound love. He’s not a he! He’s a girl she knows. She’s her classmate Mitsuki! And there’s no way Mitsuki can reveal the truth — it would be way too awkward! But what if Mitsuki continues to let Aya flirt with her? After all, Aya is a stunner, and she shares her taste in music. Can Aya’s little mistake really impede love?
Masashi Ishihama will direct The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy at All. Additional production staff members include Kanna Hirayama as character designer and Rino Yamasaki as series composer. Akari Kitou, who previously voiced Tsukasa in Tonikaku Kawaii and Kanata in the Love Live! franchise, will voice Aya Oosawa. Mariya Ise (Gojo from Jujutsu Kaisen) will voice Mitsuki Koga. CloverWorks will produce the anime for a January 2027 premiere.
Sumiko Arai originally published The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy at All (Ki ni Natteru Hito ga Otoko Janakatta) on her X account in April 2022. Pixiv Comic and Kadokawa Shoten both began publishing the manga in April of the following year. Yen Press publishes the manga in English.
