What Does NNN Mean? How No Nut November Became an Internet Tradition
NNN means No Nut November. It’s a strange internet challenge in which people are supposed to refrain from masturbation for the entire month of November. It’s mainly attempted by male users of the /r/NoFap or /r/NoNutNovember subreddits, though in 2017 the term went viral, and became part of general internet culture.
Where Did No Nut November Come From? Who Invented NNN?
No one is sure where No Nut November originated, but the first mentions in Urban Dictionary showed up back in 2011. The term is thought to have appeared on Twitter in 2010 or 2011 but didn’t generate any serious attention. It was just another thing on the internet back then, alongside Nyan Cat and Success Kid.
Is No Nut November Real?
It’s hard to tell how seriously people take something like NNN. Remember that the Tide Pod Challenge was once an actual thing. Most believe it started out as a satirical joke, then took on a life of its own along the way.

The Reddit Connection: The NNN Meme Years
According to Know Your Meme, references to a “No Nut November” challenge began generating buzz in online communities like 4chan starting in 2017. A user made a post asking “What is with no nut November?” to /r/OutOfTheLoop, which caused a huge discussion and brought the term into the mainstream for a lot of internet users.
What Are the Benefits of NNN?
I’m pretty sure you shouldn’t take sexual health advice from a guy who sells onaholes. But according to participants in No Nut November, there are some real potential benefits from abstaining from ejaculation for a month.
These supposedly include feeling more focused or having more energy, and helping manage an over-reliance on porn in daily life (always a good thing). Some men say pausing in between orgasms increases the amount of ejaculate in the future, leading to “thicker” cum, but this is mostly self-reported and based on anecdotal evidence.
What Are the Rules of No Nut November?
According to the official Subreddit, the official rules are:
- No orgasms at all, with or without ejaculation.
- Non-ejaculatory masturbation and pre-cum are allowed. The goal is to avoid actual orgasms.
- No “three strikes” rule. No “one fap free” coupons that you found online.
- Wet dreams are fine if accidental. Lucid wet dreams that you can control result in a disqualification.
- Having sex is disallowed. Yes, even birthday sex disqualifies you.
- Begin and finish No Nut November in your timezone.
- If you lose your virginity during NNN, it’s considered an “honorable discharge.”
How Has Masturbation Changed Over the History of J-List?
It’s hard to describe how much views about masturbation have changed over the past 30 years. Back in the day, a man would buy porn in front of his male friends with an ironic expression, pretending that he was buying it only to see how crazy it was. The topic of fapping was rarely brought up, and anyone who admitted to choking his chicken was met with awkward silence, then a change of subject. “Hey, how about that Lakers’ game?”
Then the internet happened, and seemingly overnight people’s views on the subject changed. In a short time, it seems like we went from everyone pretending to never wrestle with the old bald man to openly describing themselves as a “gooner” on Facebook, where their grandmother could theoretically see their comment. The rise of onaholes has been part of that: it’s pretty hard to buy one “ironically” and pretend to never use it.
Thanks for reading this blog post about the history of No Nut November. If you’re participating in the NNN challenge this year, we hope you’ll keep J-List in mind once we get into Destroy Dick December.
