Waking up without memories is bad enough. Waking up among men who consider swords standard workplace equipment seems considerably worse. Inherit the Winds (風を継ぐもの, Kaze wo Tsugumono) premieres in January 2027, following a gentle fictional recruit into the Shinsengumi’s formation. History has plenty of celebrated warriors. This fellow might prefer an emergency exit.

Inherit the Winds Gives the Wolves of Mibu a Runner
Inherit the Winds begins in June 1863 at the Mibu Roshigumi headquarters in Kyoto. An unidentified soldier arrives without his memories, and Soji Okita helps him and names him Jinsuke Tachikawa. He joins the household as the organization grows into the Shinsengumi.
The setting is the Bakumatsu, the final years of the Tokugawa shogunate. Inherit the Winds approaches that dangerous period through someone remarkably unsuited to its bloodshed: Jinsuke is kind, extraordinarily fast, poor with a sword, and uncomfortable with fighting. His missing past supplies the mystery. His legs appear to supply the contingency plan.

Inherit the Winds is a multimedia endeavor built around an original anime story, reviving Jinsuke from Narui’s Shinsengumi stage work while extending the property into manga and prose. Matsuri Muramatsu’s four-panel manga is scheduled to launch in 2026 on Twi4’s X account, with an exact start date still unannounced. Narui’s novelization arrives in Japan on December 24, 2026, from Jitsugyo no Nihon Sha. You can preorder the Japanese book through Rakuten Books.
J-List Already Knows the Wolves of Mibu
The Bakumatsu era has inspired many anime, turning political conflict into personal drama. Shinsengumi stories usually follow sword fighters defending a government in turmoil.
J-List’s Blue Miburo coverage introduces Nio as a young recruit guiding viewers into the Shinsengumi’s origin story. Inherit the Winds offers a comparable doorway, replacing Nio’s convictions with Jinsuke’s missing memories and gentle temperament.
The Rurouni Kenshin Episode 22 review revisits Saito, Soji, and a Bakumatsu clash between opposing factions. Inherit the Winds begins inside the Mibu barracks as history takes shape, whereas Kenshin dreams of those old past battles. Knowing the historical figures won’t tell us everything about the man running between them. You’ll have to watch the anime for that.

Want a glimpse of that older Japan without joining a sword patrol? J-List’s Hokusai Katsushika 2027 Calendar brings Edo-period art to your wall, including the famous Great Wave off Kanagawa. Hokusai’s woodblock prints predate Jinsuke’s 1863 arrival at Mibu. However, they do offer an artistic companion to Inherit the Winds’ look at the shogunate’s final years.
Where and When to Watch Inherit the Winds
Inherit the Winds begins in January 2027 on Sundays at 11:30 p.m. JST. The premiere date and international streaming plans remain unannounced.
Final Patrol: Inherit the Winds offers a nimble hero’s route into well-traveled history. Jinsuke’s missing identity and aversion to violence could make the organization’s rise feel personal rather than monumental. For once, the most interesting man in the barracks might be the one least eager to draw his sword.
