What Would You Do If You Realized Your First Anime Was Terrible?

What Happens When You Realize Your First Anime Was Shit?

Peter Payne by Peter Payne

While I love blogging about anime, I dislike covering new series at the beginning of a new anime season. Trying to recommend an anime based on only the first episode, which is usually not representative of the rest of the series, can be really difficult. So today, I’ll write about a meme I found, which explores what happens when fans re-watch their first anime…and discover that it was shit!

Great news! J-List is having a $40-off-$200-or-more holiday coupon you can use for all in-stock items shipping from Japan! (Except calendars and Lucky Boxes.) This means you can make a big order of ecchi products for men, manga and doujinshi, JAV DVDs and Blu-rays, or hentai products and save big. Start browsing here!

I Rewatched My First Anime And Discovered It Was Shit

What Would You Do If You Rewatched Your First Anime and Discovered It Was Shit?

Most of us first encountered anime when we were much younger. We were often unaware that what we were watching was a separate genre from Japan that fundamentally differed from every other TV cartoon on offer. We were so taken with the action and the smart character designs (and perhaps the odd panty shot) that we didn’t think too deeply about what we were watching. But we loved it!

But when we get older and wiser, what happens if we go back and re-watch our earliest anime and discover that it was shit? What happens if we learn that the show we grew up watching was less than perfect? I asked J-List customers about this, and got a lot of interesting feedback!

I have a lot of nostalgia for anime in the 2000’s that was incredibly mid. Case in point, Kaze no Stigma.

TBH, this is why I haven’t watched Elen Lied in years. I know I won’t like it as much today, but it means so much to me, as it was one of the shows that got me hooked on the medium.

My first was Attack on Titan. But rewatching Tokyo Ghoul last year made me reconsider my positive opinion of the anime.

The first anime series I watched: Dragon Ball Z, Outlaw Star, Rurouni Kenshin, and Cowboy Bebop. So, no regrets there.

Rewatching pretty much any of the ’90s OVA stuff Manga Entertainment released in the UK is a trip into pure WTF-ery and secondhand embarrassment for the fans who thought that stuff was edgy and adult. Most of it was just swearing added to the dub to bump the rating higher.

Well, my first was Dragon Ball, so no, it was pretty good.

Nah, because my earliest anime was Ranma 1/2. It’s still awesome.

Anime Cringe Meme

Nah. I embrace my inner cringe.

My first anime was .hack-friggin-//SIGN!

The original Macross is still the GOAT.

Look, there are only so many people to whom I can say, “I really liked Kiss X Sis.“

My first was Voltron. So, I can’t relate to that meme.

Naruto Shounen First Anime Is Shir

I feel sorry for the people stuck in the shounen anime genre. Sure, there are some good ones out there, but overall, you’ll be starving for really good stories if you don’t broaden out.

Nope. If anything, I’m proud of finishing the ones I did. The anime that failed to keep my interest and were dropped are the shit ones.

When I got my first-ever tetanus shot, my body violently rejected it, and I couldn’t go to school for a week. While at home, I watched all of Ladies Versus Butlers in one sitting. It wasn’t my proudest day.

Not really. When I was a child, I watched childish anime, so now that I’m an adult, I watch Loli anime. It is the natural progression of things.

Man, all these answers with pretty recent anime, making me feel old… My first anime was Ranma 1/2, I think it aged pretty well, actually.

Thanks for reading this blog about the earliest anime we watched back when we were young and impressionable, and what happens if we realize that anime was shit! What was your introduction to anime? Was it terrible, or does it still hold up today? Tell us in the comments below!
