Every time a new anime season starts, I like to take a step back and appreciate the huge variety of shows we fans are blessed with. Do you want a generic isekai series? How about a new twist on the idol anime genre? Or a weird series about girls taking a train to the end of the world? It seems there’s always something fresh and interesting to watch each season. Today, we’ll look at the wholesome romance anime Giji Harem, aka Pseudo Harem, and see if you should watch it!

What’s the Story of Giji-Harem?
Pseudo Harem is an anime about a high school girl named Rin Nanakura — played by popular seiyuu Saori Hayami — who joins her school’s drama club because she’s got a thing for her senpai, Eiji Kitahama. Eiji’s dream is to have a harem of cute girls who love him. Using her acting skills, Rin creates several characters for him in order to win both his heart and the hearts of the watching fans.
The characters she creates include the twin-tailed Tsundere-chan, a kuudere named Cool-chan, a spoiled younger-sister character called Spoiled-chan, a little devil called Koakuma-chan, and more. Each role is designed to delight Eiji and make him feel like he’s at the center of a harem of cute girls who all love him. Sadly, Eiji is clueless about Rin’s true feelings for him. How can she get him to notice the real her?
The anime is a relaxing slice-of-life centered around different school-life situations between Eiji and Rin. Whenever some new situation presents itself, Rin puts on one of her cute personas, which always raises Eiji’s spirits and gets him to go along with whatever plans she’s got for him.
A Great Anime for Saori Hayami Fans
I’ve been a fan of voice actress Saori Hayami ever since she exploded onto the scene as the yandere Ayase from Oreimo. Since then, her top roles have included:
- Awesome assassin mom Yor Forger from SPY x FAMILY
- Cool heroine Yukino Yuninoshita from Oregairu
- Confused sister Miyuki from The Irregular at Magic High School
- Popular elf Ryuu Lion from Is It Wrong To Pick Up Girls In a Dungeon?
- MILF-tastic mom Tsuki Uzaki from Uzaki-chan
- Shinobu from That Time Michael Jackson Got Reincarnated As a Demon
- …And many more!
The role of Rin from Pseudo Harem is just perfect for her, giving her lots of amazing personas to jump into as she moves the story along scene by scene.
Funded by Chinese Streaming Platform BiliBili
Anime has changed a lot since J-List was founded 28+ years ago. The industry has moved from hand-painted animation cels to 100% digital coloring. CGI has revolutionized much of how animation is created. How anime gets funded has changed a lot, too, with various international media companies discovering that it was cheaper to pony up around $1 million to sponsor a season of anime than try making an expensive live-action series like Amazon’s The Boys.
In the past, I’ve expressed nervousness about the rising influence of foreign streaming companies, especially from conservative countries like China. What if, one day, the majority of funding from anime comes from these sources, and we never get another pantyshot again? This isn’t an issue currently, and even Sony creates plenty of fan service scenes for fans to enjoy.
Another Reason to Watch Pseudo Harem? The Manga Is Concluded
There’s another reason you should check the anime out, aside from the super-cute characters Saori Hayami creates for us. The manga has concluded, so there’s a good chance we’ll get a nice story that resolves itself this season. Fingers crossed that we do because I’d love to see Rin and Eiji become a couple!
