The Attraction of Anime: It Tells Grown-Up Stories
One reason we were all drawn to anime is that it tells “grown-up” stories in which characters can be put in dramatic situations involving danger and even death. We also get stories in which couples have overcome their struggles so they can finally be together romantically. While animators often communicate this with a kiss, sometimes fans get to see the characters they’ve followed for many episodes engage in actual sex. Whether shown off-screen or depicted visually, sex is a great payoff for fans to see their favorite characters finally finding physical love with each other.
What makes an anime sex scene “wholesome”? I would say that seeing the physical encounter happen, or having it strongly implied to have happened off-screen, sends fans’ hearts soaring when they realize the goal has finally been achieved. Fans who are truly emotionally invested in the journey the characters have been on actually feel some of the joy the characters themselves are feeling as they’re finally rewarded with sexual and emotional gratification.

Mushoku Tensei Gave Us a Glorious Anime Sex Scene with Sylphy
Mushoku Tensei is my favorite isekai anime ever. I love it because it goes out of its way to break the mold of the genre. It’s based around a flawed character who must overcome his own negative traits to build a meaningful life. Because there are multiple “waifus” in the show, we get multiple sex scenes with each of them. My favorite emotional anime sex scene involved Sylphy, when Rudy had finally resolved all of his issues and was finally able to be with her.
Hori Finally Claims Miyamura for Herself
An emotional anime sex scene doesn’t have to be explicit or even show a single bit of skin. When Hori told her boyfriend Miyamura it was too rainy for him to go home, so he should stay with her, it was glorious for fans, even though we didn’t see anything happen. She even marked him with a “kiss mark” (hickey) to show the other girls in the school that he was hers.
Clannad After Story, a Truly Touching Romance Anime
I loved Clannad and Clannad After Story, which are two very different series. The first is a light-hearted high school show about a boy who must choose from a harem of quirky girls. Fans loved seeing Tomoya and Nagisa become a married couple and have a baby in After Story. Don’t you love wholesome romance anime like this?
Scum’s Wish Explores Unrequited Love
I’m a huge fan of Scum’s Wish, based on a manga by Oshi no Ko artist Mengo Yokoyari, for having the most over-the-top criss-crossing of unrequited romantic relationships. Hanabi loves her childhood friend Narumi, who is now her teacher, but she likes to hang around with her other longtime friend Mugi. Mugi’s in love with Akane, another teacher at their school, and the world’s biggest slut. Although the big draw of the story is the “surprise yuri” between Sanae and Hanabi, I loved the relationship between Mugi and Sanae. Especially how the plot tricks Akane into finally finding happiness.

More Emotional Anime Sex Scenes: Yamada’s First Time
B Gata H Kei is an anime about a girl obsessing over losing her virginity, and the ridiculous things she does to try to seduce Kosuda, the boy she chose as “the first man to get on top of me.” It’s a great show, and if you watch it, make sure you’re watching the uncensored version.
Another Emotional Anime Sex Scene: Rumbling Hearts
I’ll never forget watching Rumbling Hearts, aka Kimi ga Nozumu Eien. It’s the story of Takayuki, who is in a love triangle with Haruka and Mitsuki. When Takayuki misses a date with Haruka because Mitsuki wants to spend time with him, Haruka gets hit by a car and put into a coma for years. As Takayuki is torn apart by the guilt he feels over the accident, Mitsuki does the only thing she can do to make him come to his senses. The show is from 2003, when internet speeds were not what they are today. I was in agony waiting a week or more for each new episode to download.
Guts and Casca in Berserk
Fans were surprised at the tenderness of the scene between Guts and Casca, as no one expected that kind of physical act to be shown in anime back then.
Lucy and David from Cyberpunk Edgerunners
I was a huge fan of Cyberpunk Edgerunners, and was floored that any anime could “out-cyberpunk” my beloved Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. A high point of the series was the relationship between David and Lucy, and how their relationship grew and developed, resulting in David’s promise to take Lucy to the moon one day.
Fate/Stay Night: Heaven’s Feel (Lost Butterfly)
It was great getting to see a proper love scene between Shirou and Sakura, and the animators made sure to take their time with it. Instead of a mere “mana transfer,” we get to see a truly memorable emotional anime sex scene we’ll never forget.
Bonus: Reiko x Bike-kun from Golden Boy
No man is more responsible for me coming to Japan and starting a hentai empire than Golden Boy artist Tatsuya Egawa. I encountered his sexy manga Be Free! while I was in university and was amazed that Egawa-sensei could capture such erotic energy in his 2D characters. Egawa would go on to become famous for Golden Boy, about a young traveling student who encounters many beautiful (and strange) women in his travels.
