Anime Controversy: Fans Do Love Online Drama
The Summer 2026 anime season is pretty well stocked, with 69 (nice) new anime series or seasons. This doesn’t include continuing series like Re:Zero or That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, or eternally running shows like One Piece.
I’ve been running J-List for nearly 30 years. That means J-List has been in business for 120 anime seasons, although the current system in which anime was organized into 12- or 24-episode seasonal cours didn’t become established until around 2005. And during that time, I’ve seen lots of anime fan drama, from shock over “that scene” in End of Evangelion to strong reactions over Redo of Healer or Goblin Slayer.
The current anime season is no exception. In this post, let’s look at four anime series that have both long-time fans and casual viewers arguing online!
A Grooming Anime?? Lots of Anime Fan Drama with Mushoku Tensei Season 3
I’m a card-carrying fan of Mushoku Tensei, so much that J-List’s mascot Megumi made a video listing all the reasons why it’s the best-executed isekai Japan has ever made. But the current season has proven to be a lightning rod for controversy, because Rudy was a 34-year-old otaku shut-in who got reincarnated as a baby in a fantasy world with all his memories intact. Naturally, any scene with him interacting with any female character causes certain fans to call it a “PDF anime.” And I’m not talking about Adobe’s Portable Document Format.
Then Kotaku — a publication that felt the need to wave its finger at all of us for loving the fan service in Keijo!!!! — decided to chime in. They asked fans to stop recommending this “grooming-based harem story disguised as a fantasy isekai,” which naturally generated a strong reaction across the weeb internet. One commentator summed it up best: “If Kotaku thinks I shouldn’t watch this anime, that means I should.”
What do I think? I obviously love the series and consider it to be the best-written anime I’ve ever encountered, especially considering it started out as a “Narou-kei” online novel. If a creator wants to tell a story involving off-color humor and sexual situations, that’s their right. American writers or keyboard warriors on Reddit do not get to decide what kind of popular culture Japan chooses to create. Only Japan gets to do that.
Is Ghost in the Shell 2026 a Letdown for Fans?
Poor Ghost in the Shell can’t catch a break. The franchise’s last major anime got hammered for leaning too hard into CGI (although much to my surprise, I didn’t hate it). This time, Bandai Namco hired Science SARU to give us something totally fresh and new. That won’t cause any anime controversy, right?
Unfortunately, the visuals of the new offering are so far removed from the beloved series of the past that the reboot is causing lots of fan drama online. Fans who grew up on Mamoru Oshii’s 1995 film or the legendary Stand Alone Complex series are definitely not loving the new character designs.
Personally, I don’t hate the new series. It looks as if they were starting over from scratch, using Masamune Shirow’s original manga as the jumping-off point. Seen in that light, it’s really not that bad.
Yani Neko is the Anime About a Chainsmoking Cat We Didn’t Know We Needed
Another new anime that’s been generating a lot of buzz across the internet is Yani Neko, aka Chainsmoker Cat. It’s available on Netflix. It’s about a catgirl named Yaniko who’s so addicted to cigarettes that her life is falling apart around her. Fans are generally shocked that such a grotesque anime could actually get funded in 2026. But I’m happy to see that anime hasn’t lost its ability to give us new and experimental stories.
I’ve enjoyed comparing the reactions to the series by English-speaking vs Japanese anime fans on Twitter. In general, fans in the English-speaking world expressed disgust at the visuals of the show and the filthy way Yaniko lives. Japanese viewers seem impressed that such a yabai (over-the-top) show would get made, and are enjoying where the creators are taking the story.
The best take I found: When you stare into the abyss, the abyss stares right back into your soul. And in this specific case, the abyss happens to be Yani’s absolutely filthy-ass room.
Is Youjo Senki II Just Fascism for Anime Fans?
After a seven-year wait, we finally got Season 2 of Youjo Senki: Saga of Tanya the Evil. It’s the story of a Japanese salaryman reincarnated as a blonde-haired girl soldier. He (she) is fighting in a war that’s part WWI and part WWII with magical attacks thrown in. And like clockwork, the season reignited an old debate: is Tanya’s story glorifying fascism, or is it clever commentary on it?
On one hand, Tanya is pure isekai power fantasy dressed in a military uniform. It’s violence on the level of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, and watching it makes me feel kind of queasy inside. It’s definitely not for everyone.
But in the end, haters of this anime will have to realize that some popular media absolutely do make use of the visual language of the past, including the military uniforms and war. If someone tells me that I can’t watch Attack on Titan or Star Wars because of the obvious ways they repurpose elements of Europe’s past, I’m going to politely — or maybe not so politely — ignore them.
