Poor Mona Kawai Can’t Get Medaka Kuroiwa to Notice Her!
Mona Kawai is Queen Bee of the school: beautiful, admired, and the object of every boy’s attention. Well, every boy except one: recent transfer student Medaka Kuroiwa. No matter how much charm Mona throws his way, Medaka refuses to be lured in by her. She thinks he hates her, but the truth is more complicated. Medaka is planning on taking over his family’s Buddhist temple and has been told to avoid women if he wants to keep his heart pure.
And so begins a cute and slightly ridiculous romance anime in which Mona comes up with new ploys to catch Medaka’s eye, letting him get a glimpse of her pantsu, looking extra sexy during P.E. class, or cornering him in the nurse’s office. Every time it happens, Medaka tries his best to keep his cool. But when push comes to shove he can’t help showing his feelings for Mona.
Things get even more interesting when we meet Tsubomi, a charming girl who Mona thinks is also gunning for Medaka. But Tsubomi is in love with Mona herself, which could make for some unexpected yuri moments.
Mona Kawai Is a Unique Heroine
In addition to giving fans plenty of fan service moments, the titular (heh) heroine of Kuroiwa Medaka ni Watashi no Kawaii ga Tsuujinai is unique in a lot of ways. While shoujo anime often tells stories from the point of view of the female character pursuing love, this anime is in the shounen genre. Also, Mona is from Osaka, and all her internal dialogue is in a thick Osaka dialect, which is fresh and new to watch.
(I checked the English dub to make sure they didn’t try to give Mona a New Jersey or Florida accent to reflect Osaka. They didn’t, but man, that is not a good dub.)

Based on a Popular Manga
While there are some really amazing anime based on light novels, it’s also true that the vast majority of truly mediocre anime come from this source. Any time you’ve watch an anime with a title like I Couldn’t Be A Hero, So I Decided to Farm In Another World With My Elf Bride, it’s likely been based on a light novel that originated with the Shousetsuka ni Narou (“Let’s Become A Novelist!”) website. These anime are known as Narou-kei.
So I was happy to see that Kuroiwa Medaka ni Watashi no Kawaii ga Tsuujinai is based on a popular manga by Ran Kuze, a professional manga artist who’s been working in the industry since 2004. In order to become a professional manga artist, you need to have proven that you can tell a good story and meet your deadlines. I believe the Medaka Kuroiwa anime will be better because it’s based on a manga. The only problem is, with 9 volumes of the story out, will we get any kind of resolution in the anime?
Medaka Kuroiwa Features Great Voice Acting
Unless you watch the English dub, the production is really amazing. Yuu Serizawa does a great job voicing Mona’s Osaka dialect. We also get a great performance from Hana Kanazawa, who voices Mona’s rival Tsubomi.
