I love a good tournament anime, and we don’t get enough of them. Alternate-history anime are likewise a welcome surprise. It’s always interesting to see how the world might turn out if one or two things changed, as in the new anime Tenkaichi: The Greatest Warrior Under the Rising Sun (Tenkaichi: Nihon Saikyo Bugeisha Ketteisen).

Tenkaichi: The Greatest Warrior Under the Rising Sun News, Cast, Staff
Oda’s grand tournament will begin sometime in April 2027. Masashi Abe sits as the director, Kazuharu Sato wields the pen, Ryōji Nakamori designs the characters, and Hayato Matsuo provides the epic anime music.
Three of the gathered legendary warriors are as follows:

- Oda Nobunaga — Kenyu Horiuchi (Wilhelm van Astrea from Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-). Nobunaga is the elderly emperor of a unified Japan.
- Honda Tadakatsu — Kenichirou Matsuda (Bond Forger from Spy x Family). Tadakatsu is one of the mightiest veteran warriors in all of Japan.
- Miyamoto Musashi — Gen Sato (Gale Gibson from That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime). Musashi is a young sword prodigy who has not had a challenging match in years.
Studio Fugaku will animate the anime adaptation, which has an official website and also Twitter (X) and YouTube accounts promoting Tenkaichi: The Greatest Warrior Under the Rising Sun. You can find more information about the series and the key visuals at those sites.
The animation studio is working outside their wheelhouse with this one, because Studio Fugaku put out the cutesy Nyanchus and the romantic Date A Live F: Last Date before this. But it looks like they can handle the violence without a problem. I’m surprised that the Record of Ragnarok studios weren’t behind this one. This really is just Record of Ragnarok but with alternate-history Sengoku-period Japan elements. As an aside, how many other gamers saw “tenkaichi” and immediately thought about Dragon Ball?
Finding a New War After an Age of Peace, Tenkaichi: The Greatest Warrior Under the Rising Sun
I’ll be honest. I love series that give historical Japanese figures superhuman abilities so they can go nuts against one another. Tadakatsu Honda is a walking tank (with pink hair for some reason), and Miyamoto Musashi is tall as hell (and looks like a bum for some reason). Kenshi Himura could solo them all. Change my mind. Oda Nobunaga is a frail old dude with unfocused eyes. That’s creepy as hell to see.

Three of the announced historical figures stand out to me. Fuuma Kotaro, because the newest person to hold the title is a busty waifu. William Adams, because I’m curious about why a foreigner is there to crown the new emperor. And Yasuke, because of the dumpster fire that was Assassin’s Creed: Shadows.
I look forward to seeing how this new tournament unfolds and whether or not Oda is as frail and senile as he seems.z
A Closer Look at Tenkaichi: The Greatest Warrior Under the Rising Sun
Tenkaichi: The Greatest Warrior Under the Rising Sun manga summary:
This is not history as we know it. The year is 1600. Ten years have passed since Oda Nobunaga unified the whole of Japan. When Nobunaga realizes he is nearing the end of his life, he announces that he will hand over the reins of power to whoever brings him the strongest warrior. The generals, whose dreams of conquering the country had been crushed, put up their own strongest warriors and aim to become the king of the country! The first match is peerless spear wielder Honda Tadakatsu (sponsored by Tokugawa Ieyasu) vs. evolving prodigy Miyamoto Musashi (sponsored by Chosokabe Motochika)!!
Yōsuke Nakamaru and Kyōtarō Azuma released the original Tenkaichi: The Greatest Warrior Under the Rising Sun manga series on January 6th, 2021. Kodansha has since published thirteen volumes in Young Magazine the 3rd and Monthly Young Magazine.
