People talk about isekai fatigue, but isn’t it really RPG interface fatigue? So, how about a freshly imaginative story about supernatural powers? Like wearing masks? Trying on a mysterious mask at a festival sounds fun until the face comes with claws or a lifetime of guilt-ridden regret. The Vermilion Mask (朱色の仮面, Shuiro no Kamen) follows a remorseful craftsman hunting the magical products that destroyed his life. Its appeal comes from an instantly readable power system and fellow travelers with plenty of room for dangerous new faces.

The Vermilion Mask Makes Every New Face a Dangerous Choice
Peru d’Arrest once trained as a mask maker before a powerful magical mask took control of him and turned his craft into a tragedy. In The Vermilion Mask, he now travels the world destroying the remaining masks before their powers ruin more lives.

Episode 1 brings Peru to gloomy Lisblanc during a masked celebration. He attempts to sell harmless creations while the streetwise Sonarue Maywood (Sona for short) pulls him into conflict with the city’s oppressive authorities. The Vermilion Mask premiere quickly demonstrates the appeal of its magic system: one mask forces a smile, while others grant animal-like agility. You see a mask, understand its function, and wait for somebody to make terrible fashion decisions.
The Cast and Staff Put on Their Production Faces
These performers are the voices behind The Vermilion Mask:

- Taihi Kimura — Peru d’Arrest. A remorseful mask maker, Peru runs the world’s most dangerous product recall.
- Yuuki Yamamoto — Sonarue Maywood. Streetwise and quick on her feet, Sona becomes Peru’s first traveling companion.
- Kazuhiko Inoue — Gaston Roux. Peru’s legendary former master leaves behind a handcrafted legacy with catastrophic side effects.
- Akio Ootsuka — the Mask of the Warrior God. With a truly unacceptable return policy, this sentient face accessory ruined Peru’s life.
The production team brings The Vermilion Mask’s dangerous inventory to the screen:

- Animation production — 100studio
- Director — Tetsuaki Watanabe
- Original story — Dr.Poro
- Original manga art — Nabana Naba
- Opening theme — “Firestarter” by MAN WITH A MISSION
- Ending theme — “Koe” by yutori
Inoue and Otsuka also voiced Cars and Wham in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Battle Tendency (2012). Two of those Pillar Men have reunited around another supernatural mask collection. Ancient evil apparently offers excellent alumni networking.
First Impressions Put Powers in Plain Sight

The premiere’s strongest feature is clarity. The Vermilion Mask crafts each mask with an immediate visual purpose, letting the action establish its rules without stopping for a magical user manual. Peru’s remorse also gives the artifact-hunting structure weight: every destroyed mask removes part of a dangerous legacy while forcing him to confront his own.

Peru and Sona quickly form an engaging traveling pair, and Lisblanc’s political crisis gives their first encounter momentum. Viewers who enjoyed how Battle Tendency turned strange abilities into inventive confrontations should recognize the appeal. The Vermilion Mask also builds narrative scaffolding through the craftsman chasing his master’s dangerous creations. The hunt for each mask marks separate chapters and conclusions, leaving plenty of room to swing moral themes around as it plops down supernatural violence. The moral of each story arc arrives just in time for a brutally final action sequence. Win-win!
J-List’s JoJo anime crash course identifies the Pillar Men as the creators of the Stone Masks while highlighting Battle Tendency’s flamboyant set pieces. The Vermilion Mask offers the same immediate pleasure of seeing one strange supernatural ability collide with another. Every encounter also feels the weight of Peru’s atonement.
Where to Watch The Vermilion Mask
The Vermilion Mask streams on Crunchyroll with Japanese audio and English subtitles in supported regions. The anime will split cours, with Part 1 ending at Episode 12 and Part 2 picking up in April 2027.
Mask Inspection: The Vermilion Mask makes a strong first impression through its easy-to-read powers, guilt-driven hero, and promising Peru-Sona partnership. Much fresher than hoary video game status screens. Its supernatural masks offer plenty of room for inventive encounters — and extremely poor impulse purchases.
