J.C.Staff is back to create a new sword and sorcery anime series! This anime joins the likes of The Familiar of Zero, Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?, and In Another World with My Smartphone in their catalog of great medieval magic-themed series. It might be their first “exiled from the party” series (can’t wait for people to correct me in the comments). If you’ve seen one “exiled from the party” series, you’ve seen Magical Buffs: The Support Caster Is Stronger Than He Realized! (Zatsuyo Fuyo Jutsushi ga Jibun no Saikyou ni Kizuku made). That’s not a bad thing, exactly. There’s a silver-haired beauty who leads the new large-scale party, and a twin-tailed stalker childhood friend. It’s also just wholesome to see the new party offer genuine kindness to our deeply self-deprecating magic support main character.

The adventuring party Nacht Libelle will be welcoming its new party member sometime in January 2027. Hideki Okamoto is on hand to direct, Ryo Aizawa will serve as the producer, Takao Yoshioka is penning the series, and Yuki Hayashi, Luke Stanridge, and Asa Taylor will all provide those sweet anime songs.
The support mage with zero confidence, his childhood friend, and his new boss are as follows:
- Wim Strauss — Reiji Kawashima (Patrick / Ricky from Shadows House). Wim is a self-deprecating support mage with hidden talent.
- Heidemarie — Hana Hishikawa (Aki Sizuha from Touhou Danmaku Kagura). Heidemarie is a powerful offensive mage and Wim’s stalker childhood friend.
- Camilla — Akeno Watanabe (Kneesocks from New Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt). Camilla is the strongest warrior and leads Nacht Libelle.
J.C.Staff will animate the anime adaptation, which has an official website and Twitter (X) accounts promoting Magical Buffs. You can find more information about the series and the key visuals at those sites.
Magical Buffs and Emotional Development Build Heroes
The “let’s banish this guy from the party, there’s no way it can backfire” trope remains tried and true here. This is one of the variants that keeps flashing to the original rotten party to show how far they’re falling, though. Some readers who follow this type of series only want the original party done and dusted. Others might want the dark joy of seeing them come crawling back to watch the hero shoot them down. It’s risky since Wim has such low confidence, but his new friends all know the deal, and they’re willing to wage war to protect him. Those kinds of series are nice to see. Friendship is, indeed, magic.
The PV does a fine job of highlighting how wretched Wim’s original party was and how great the new party is. I mean, his former leader pulled a sword on him after he tried to explain how useful he was in a boss fight. Well, the new party has far better waifus, too. The leader is a silver-haired beauty who holds him in the highest regard, and his childhood friend is this close to being a full-blown yandere. She’s cute, even when she stalks him and bugs his clothes to spy on his conversations. Her cuteness is just enough to make up for how dark the series can get.

Wim Strauss is a “granting caster”—a support mage who can increase the strength of his allies through the power of his spells. It’s a useful talent, but since it can’t be used directly in battle, it gets zero respect from the other members of his party. As far as they’re concerned, support magic is dead weight. It isn’t long before they toss him out on his ear, leaving Wim to wonder if his career as an adventurer is over.
Lucky for Wim, he has one big chance: his childhood friend Heidemarie is able to get him an audition with her elite A-rank party, Nachtlibelle. The two of them know his magic is good for more than just menial backup, but now he’ll have to prove it. It’s time to show the world that support mages can do more than just stand on the back lines!
Haka Tokura released the original Magical Buffs novel on the user-generated website Shosetsuka ni Naro on November 9th, 2020. Eiri Shirai provided the art for the light novel adaptation, which debuted on September 30th, 2021. Futabasha has published three volumes in the M Novels imprint. Shin Arakawa provided the art for the manga adaptation, which debuted on September 23rd, 2021. Futabasha has published eleven volumes in Gaugau Monster.
