The Fall 2026 Anime Season is a Huge One

It seems that every anime season is bigger than the last. This time we’ve got 63 new anime shows, not counting eternally ongoing series or films. It can be extremely hard to find enough time to watch all the shows you want to follow. Hopefully this J-List Fall 2026 anime guide will help guide you!

The Apothecary Diaries Season 3

First, we get more of the ongoing adventures of Maomao and Jinshi, and the dramatic events of the Imperial Court. The studios have done such a great job on the first two seasons of this show, and fans will be happy to have more!

Another Gem of the Fall 2026 Anime Season: Ao no Hako Season 2

For some reason I fell head over heels for this school love triangle about badminton player Taiki, his live-in crush Chinatsu and his childhood friend Hina. The quality of the animation was so intense, even for something as simple as a school sports/romance anime, that I felt it would be rude to the creators to not watch. Will Taiki be able to move forward in his relationship with Chinatsu this season?

Magic Knight Rayearth (2026)

This one has me quite nervous. I was a huge fan of the original Rayearth from 1994, and actually used it to trick my kids into learning English, pretending that the DVD boxed set I had only had English audio. The animation is done by E&H Creation, a newer studio without a long track record. Will the new show feature the classic songs from the original? Will all the characters still be named after cars? I must know!

Mahou Shoujo Ikusei Keikaku: Restart

I loved the aftermath of Puella Magi Madoka Magica, when several “dark” magical girl shows came out, trying to out-Madoka Madoka. One of my favorites was Magical Girl Raising Project, in which girls sign up to become magical girls via an app. The strongest of these progress in level, while the weaker ones get…dead.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2

I was a huge fan of the original Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime, the best iteration of the genre since Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. The new season, which is also headed by Trigger and based on a script by CD Projekt Red, seems to feature new characters. Let’s hope they can recapture the magic of the original, especially Rebecca!

Sasaki to Pii-chan Season 2

I thoroughly enjoyed season one of the “business isekai comedy” Sasaki and Peeps, and will be tuning in for season two. Part of it is my deep love of Kantoku’s character designs, and an odd compulsion to watch any show featuring Kyon voice actor Tomokazu Sugita. Plus I always appreciate a fresh take on the isekai genre, with the main character setting up a trading company, bringing products from his world to sell them in the fantasy world.

#Zombie Sagashitemasu

We all love a good zombie anime, and I’ll give this new offering a try. A girl is on a quest to find her father, who’s been turned into a zombie, and kill him!

More Fall 2026 Anime: Dragon Ball Super: Beerus

I’m on record as not being a fan of the shounen genre, mainly because by the time series like Dragon Ball and Naruto came out, I was already right where I am now — running J-List and blogging. The new series — which is made to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the series — looks gorgeous, and I have to give props to Toei. At least it’s not 100% CGI, like the (borderline unwatchable for an old-school fan like me) Fist of the North Star 2026.

The Detective Is Already Dead Season 2

One show I’m surprised to see returning is Tantei wa Mou, Shindeiru. I enjoyed the original, although it was a good example of a poorly structured anime based on a poorly structured light novel series. Will fans be sufficiently charmed by Siesta’s antics in the Fall 2026 anime season for the show to succeed?

Which Romance Anime Will Break Through in the Fall 2026 Anime Season?

You never know ahead of time which romance anime offerings will break through with fandom. One is The Cold Sato-san is Only Sweet to Me, about a cold and distant girl who suffers from shyness and anxiety. When Souta is able to bond with her over their shared love of photographing desserts, she warms up to him.

Then we have Hello, I Am a Witch and My Crush Wants Me to Make a Love Potion!, about a young witch who lives in a lonely cottage where she makes love potions. When Rose’s crush, the noble knight Harij, appears on her doorstep asking for a love potion, how does she react?

New Seasons of Reincarnated as a Sword, Ranma 1/2, Chitose-kun

The Fall 2026 anime season also features plenty of new seasons. We’ve got more Ranma 1/2, a show that fans of the classic version seem to be skipping. Reincarnated as a Sword was surprisingly fun, about a magical sword and the demi-human girl he’s training. Finally there’s part two of Chitose is in the Ramune Bottle season one, about a boy who solves the personal issues of his classmates. The quality of this final show is excellent, and the waifus are top-notch. Personally, I get a little tired following intense dramas about characters half one-third my age.

Doomed Remakes? Prince of Tennis and Sgt. Frog

Finally, we’ve got more back-from-the-dead anime series getting resurrected. While fans loved the original Prince of Tennis, can they really get the same level of excitement a quarter-century later? And Sgt. Frog is coming back, too. While I’m a huge fan of artist Mine Yoshizaki (who, like many artists, got his start drawing hentai), is there enough of a fanbase left to support the new series?
