Terrible Tanya and the Tantalizing Trance Temptation of Tobacco
I used to, once, get strong tobacco pangs. I’d dream about smoking, then I’d wake up wanting a cigarette. But I’ve never smoked. Ever. I felt like a recovering smoker, but with the well-honed, crystal-clean lungs of a couch potato.
This whole weird episode raised the question: Would you start dressing in Nazi chic after watching too many episodes of The Saga of Tanya the Evil? Hang around with the bad kids, and you become one too. Don’t you?
You had the same questions, I’m sure.
And Speaking of Nazis…
I (accidentally) gave a bunch of strangers the idea I was a pro-Nazi.
We were at a party, and things were going well. One of the guys was bending over his cooler bag, and I could barely make out the words “Afrika” on his shirt. So, I, who’s proudly South African, said, “Nice shirt.” But when he stood up, the swastika over palm trees of the Nazi Afrika Korps was clear for all to see.
Whoops!
Fashion, Fascism, and Funny Führer Facial Features
I guess Nazisploitation (today’s new word) will get a reaction out of anyone with a pulse. Which is probably why Carlo Zen had chosen a fantastical World War One with hints of World War Two as the backdrop for Tanya’s story. Zen (the mangaka) and the Hell’s Angels weren’t the only ones to take inspiration from Nazi Germany. Did you know California has surf Nazis? They were basically punk kids with spray cans and an egotistic sense of territorialism.
And punks like anything that’ll rile up the establishment. But, as much as I like punk culture, I’m no fan of the Vivian Westwood-conceptualized Neo-Nazi look. The Third Reich’s fashion sense is so 1945.
Imagine taking fashion tips from Adolf Hitler!
