Japan’s history and development have unfolded somewhat differently from what we knew. Rather than electricity, scientists and engineers harnessed the power of steam to develop their cities. Two people who struggle under the weight of similar tragedies share the same dream of a Japan lit by electric lights. We’ll see how they overcome the forces that move against them when Sparks of Tomorrow (Nijuuseiki Denki Mokuroku: Eureka Evrika) premieres sometime in 2026.
Hiro Yuki and Kazumi Ikeda released the original Sparks of Tomorrow light novel on August 10th, 2018. Kyoto Animation published this novel in the KA Esuma Bunko imprint.
Sparks of Tomorrow Cast
The two who dream of an electric city are as follows:
- Kihachi Sakamoto — Yuma Uchida (Megumi Fushiguro from Jujutsu Kaisen). Kihachi’s enjoyment of invention dimmed after his brother vanished.
- Inako Momokawa — Sora Amamiya (Illustrious from Azur Lane). Inako wishes to follow in her mother’s footsteps to become a sake brewer.

Sparks of Tomorrow vs. Steampunk of Today
A cloud of steam hangs over Meiji-era Kyoto. Steam has usurped electricity as the dominant source of power in Japan. However, progress has slowed to a halt. It’s in this steam-shrouded atmosphere that two brilliant souls have a fateful meeting. There is a boy who dreams of an electric city, and a girl who dreams of brewing sake. Like Japan itself, their progress faltered.
Kihachi Sakamoto is a young inventor who once shared with his older brother the goal of ushering in an age of electricity. Circumstances forced him to stop after his brother mysteriously disappeared. Inako Momokawa wants to follow in her late mother’s footsteps and become a sake brewer. She now lives a devout life while hiding her dreams. Kihachi and Inako meet and discover a strange book titled 20th Century Electrical Catalog. The secrets contained within could change the entire world.
