The new anime season is off and running, and I’m trying to follow at least a dozen new shows. One that immediately grabbed fans’ attention is the Atelier Ryza anime, a.k.a. Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout: The Animation. It’s great to finally see Ryza (and her thighs) in animated form. Although some people aren’t happy about the ultimate feel-good game-to-anime adaptation. Keep reading to find out why!
The Atelier Ryza Anime is Here. How Are the Thighs?
The Atelier Series of fantasy RPGs began way back in 1997 and has really exploded in popularity over the past few years. This is largely thanks to Atelier Ryza and the main character’s unique character design…specifically her “absolute zone” and dummy thick thighs, which naturally get plenty of screen time in the anime.
Atelier Ryza is the story of Reisalin “Ryza” Stout, who lives a dull existence on Kurken Island. She wants to become an alchemist and go on adventures with her childhood friends Lent and Tao, but the people around her want her to stop her silly dreaming. But nothing can stop Ryza when she sets her mind to something!
The visuals by LIDENFILMS are gorgeous. This studio brought us such solid works as Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor and Tokyo Revengers, along with sexy offerings like Magical Sempai and Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches.
And naturally, the thighs are equally gorgeous, and the attention given to them in the first two episodes was enjoyable. In addition to the visual eye candy, the story is relaxing and fun as we watch Ryza grow in skill at alchemy.
Who Dislikes the Atelier Ryza Anime?
When researching fan reactions to the Atelier Ryza anime, I saw that some fans were taking issue with a review of the show by the Anime Feminist blog. I’d like to say that I’m a fan of this site and sometimes pop in to see what takes the writers have on a certain show just for reference for my own blogging. There’s nothing wrong with a bunch of people having different viewpoints about an anime, after all.

The Anime Feminist reviewer was extremely harsh with the Atelier Ryza anime, complaining about Ryza’s “melon breasts” and “shorts looking like a bright red diaper,” and of course the constant displays of her plump thighs from every angle.
But attacking a show whose whole purpose is to highlight the main character’s thighs in a fun way that 99% of fans enjoy is ridiculous and only makes the writer look like sour grapes. I have some advice for the writer of that review:
- If you don’t like alcohol, stay out of bars.
- If you don’t like chocolate, don’t go into a chocolate shop.
- If you don’t like male-targeted fan service anime, don’t watch male-targeted fan service anime.
You get the idea.
What’s Wrong With Enjoying a Show For its Visual Elements?
What I love about anime is it’s a Really Big Tent. Anime isn’t a genre; it’s a massive super-category with hundreds of smaller categories inside. There are still hundreds of genres and thousands of series to enjoy instead if you don’t like anime about giant robots or idols or sports or BL or yuri. And more are being invented each year.
There are 47 new series airing in the Summer 2023 anime season, only 3–4 of which will likely have more than a single sexy fan service scene. So there should be no reason for any group to tut-tut at us unwashed fans for enjoying a choice camera angle or two now and then.
