Is Tonikaku Kawaii the Cutest Propaganda for Marriage?

Tonikawa Season 2 is Here! Why Is This Anime So Relaxing?

Season 2 of Tonikaku Kawaii is here, once again allowing us to enjoy the adorable lovey-dovey romance between Nasa Yuzaki and his wife Tsukasa. Let’s explore why Tonikawa has become such a phenomenon among anime fans!

The J-List website has been completely revamped with a faster and more mobile-friendly server. We’re still importing old orders and J-List Points from the old server, so please be patient for a few more days. Visit the new site now and see how you like it!

Why is Tonikaku Kawaii so Relaxing?

Usually storytelling involves characters with conflicts that need resolving. A boy and a girl love each other, but each is determined to force the other to confess their feelings first. A spy must create a fake family so he can carry out his mission and bring about world peace. A mad scientist must find a way to undo the horrific future he created with his microwave-time machine.

And then there’s Tonikaku Kawaii, the story of Nasa, a boy who meets a mysterious girl named Tsukasa in the snow and falls in love with her…then gets hit by a truck. Tsukasa saves his life, and agrees to marry him. Two years later Tsukasa shows up on Nasa’s doorstep, and they’re soon married.

And…they live happily ever after. That’s it. No stupid story arcs involving misunderstandings, no impossibly dense main characters, no being interrupted by a childhood friend/romantic love interest who’s returned home after many years apart. The only drama comes from whether Tsukasa’s eccentric family will accept the couple’s marriage or not, and whether Sora and Tsukasa will hold hands or actually kiss in bed together tonight.

Oh, there’s also the secret of who Tsukasa herself is, which we might learn this season. I can’t wait!

Zexy Magazine

Is This Just Propaganda for Marriage?

While watching Nasa and Tsukasa enjoy their married life together is super chill, you might get the idea that manga-ka Kenjiro Hata (who also created Hayate the Combat Butler and Sore ga Seiyu) wants to encourage anime otakus to get married and have babies. Going out of his way to have Nasa and Tsukasa buy a copy of Zexy, which is a real magazine for marriage-minded people planning a wedding, really feels like he wants to promote marriage to anti-social otaku. Who does he think he is??

And yet, as Nasa’s former junior high school teacher learns after watching Nasa and Tsukasa together, life is supposed to be about being happy. Every day running around and being anxious is another day of that life gone forever. If you’re worried about all the work you have to get done, don’t be: your future self will manage that somehow. It’s better to spend quality time with the people you love today than worry overly much about what you should be achieving in life.

I know from experience there’ll be a lot of viewers of Tonikawa who pooh-pooh the idea of ever finding someone to marry. Anime fans can’t find love or marriage partners, that’s why we watch romance anime. Right?

And yet…for every male fan I see on Twitter complaining about how hard it is to find a girlfriend who’d be understanding of his otaku hobbies, I see a girl commenting about not having a boy to date. There are so many anime fans sitting home alone, when they could be enjoying anime together. So while we might not be able to find our very own Tsukasa-chan, by not giving in to cynicism we certainly could find a fun person to form an “Ota-couple” with someday.

What do you think? Want to give it a try?
