Anime production studio WHITE FOX has been churning out quite a few fantasy hits as of late. They were responsible for the iconic anime adaptation Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World, and recently finished airing their take on the iconic action light novel series Goblin Slayer. Now, the formidable anime company is back in the world of high-fantasy and isekai adventure. This time, however, there’s a much bigger focus on comedy. WHITE FOX is adapting the light novel series The Hero is Overpowered but Overly Cautious, and it starts airing this year, on October 2nd.
The Hero is Overpowered but Overly Cautious (titled Shincho Yusha: Kono Yusha ga Ore TUEEE Kuse ni Shincho Sugiru in Japan) started off as a light novel series written by Light Tuchihi and illustrated by Kakuyomu. As many successful isekai light novel series go, it eventually got a manga adaptation back in November 2018 in the manga magazine Monthly Dragon Age. The final piece of the puzzle, an anime adaptation, was first announced back in May of this year. Thanks to an official announcement, though, we now have the TV broadcast schedule for the show:
- AT-X: every Wednesday during the 22: 30 time slot beginning on October 2nd, 2019
- Tokyo MX: every Wednesday during the 23: 30 time slot beginning on October 2nd, 2019
- KBS Kyoto: every Wednesday during the 25:35 time slot beginning on October 2nd, 2019
- Sun TV: every Wednesday during the 26:00 time slot beginning on October 2nd, 2019
- TV Aichi: every Thursday during the 26:05 time slot beginning on October 3rd, 2019
- B11: every Thursday during the 23:00 time slot beginning on October 3rd, 2019
- AbemaTV: every Wednesday during the 23:00 time slot beginning on October 2nd, 2019
Our overprepared protagonist of The Hero is Overpowered but Overly Cautious is set to be voiced by Yuichiro Umehara, who has a little history with WHITE FOX as the voice of the Goblin Slayer in their anime adaptation. He also played Gorou in Darling in the FranXX and Mars in Black Clover.
The air-headed goddess who summons him to a new world, meanwhile, will be played by voice actress Aki Toyasaki. You might recognize her as Yui Hirasawa from iconic KyoAni anime K-ON, or as “Robo” in the currently airing Joshikousei no Mudazukai.
The TV anime adaptation of The Hero is Overpowered but Overly Cautious is set to be directed by Masayuki Sakoi, who previously worked on Sword Art Online Alternative Gun Gale Online. Meanwhile, Kenta Inohara will be in charge of writing the screenplay and handling series composition for the anime. He previously worked on The Saga of Tanya the Evil. Finally, Mai Toda will be in charge of character design for the upcoming anime. Toda previously acted as character designer on Matoi the Sacred Slayer.
Light Tuchihi’s original novel series Kono Yusha ga Ore TUEEE Kuse ni Shincho Sugiru has been hosted online via the Kadokawa user-run novel publishing site Kakuyomu since June of 2016. In February 2017, the first print edition of the novel with illustrations by Saori Toyota was released by the publisher. As of now, five volumes have been made available in Japan.
Here’s a full synopsis of the series:
The spoiled rookie goddess Ristarte takes charge of salvation of a super hard mode world. She successfully summons a hero named Seiya Ryuguin who has a cheating-level status, but he is incredibly cautious…? When he buys his armors, “I want three. One to wear, one for spare, and one for spare when the spare is gone.” In addition to keeping a massive amount of the stocks of items, he stays in his room for weight training until he reaches his maximum level. And even when he fights against a slime, he is cautious enough to use his full power.
