Monster girls are a hallmark in anime. They’re inhuman beings with inhuman physical and mystical traits. It’s the allure of the unknown that draws us to them. Tall or short, two legs or more, there’s a monster girl for everyone. Let’s take a look at just a few of these girls and their respective species.
1. Reiri Kamura (Princess Resurrection / Kaibutsu Oujo)
Reiri is a vampire allied to a phoenix, a werewolf, an android, and a flame warrior. Her monster girl type can be as beautiful as she is deadly. As a pure-blood vampire, she has incredible speed, strength, the gift of flight, and the ability to survive during the day. As Reiri, she is prone to accidentally exposing her black panties. Despite her aloof and flirtatious attitude, she is a loyal friend and fierce combatant.
Yasunori Mitsunaga brought the original manga series to life from June 25th, 2005 to February 26th, 2013. Kodansha published all twenty volumes in Monthly Shonen Sirius.
2. Sun Seto (My Bride is a Mermaid / Seto no Hanayome)
Sun is a mermaid, a more beautiful monster girl. Besides her beauty, Sun is also a skilled combatant who can empower her husband-to-be with her song. She saved Nagasumi Michishio from drowning during his summer vacation. Mermaid law says that one of them must die, either the human to keep the existence of mermaids a secret, or the mermaid for breaking the law. A third option was found: Sun and Nagasumi would be wed.
Tahiko Kimura wrote and illustrated this manga series from July 26th, 2002 to November 22nd, 2010. Square Enix published all sixteen volumes in Monthly Gangan Wing, and later in Monthly Gangan Joker.
3. Celty Sturluson (Durarara!!)
Celty is a Dullahan, a type of fairy from Ireland. She’s a monster girl of the headless variety. Her head was stolen, leading her to travel from her home all the way to Japan. Her headless steed, Shooter, takes the form of a black motorcycle. Celty has taken up residence in Ikebukuro to find her missing head.
Ryogo Narita and Suzuhito Yasuda created the original light novel between April 25th, 2004 and January 10th, 2014. ASCII Media Works published all thirteen novels, and an extra, in the Dengeki Bunko imprint.
4. Arahnia Taranterra Arachnida (Monster Girl Doctor)
Arahnia is, as her name implies, a spider woman of the arachne type. She works as a fashion designer, and uses her own silk for production. Her skill is such that she can do minute stitching quickly and efficiently. Arahnia has previously made sun-resistant clothes for the albino lamia Saphentite Neikes. Glenn, the titular monster doctor, has decided to go the harem route with monster girls and take Arahnia as his bride-to-be. Joe covered all the monster girl goodness in the series in his reviews.
Yoshino Origuchi and Z-Ton worked on the original light novel series from June 24th, 2016 to March 25th, 2022. Shueisha published all ten volumes in the Dash X Bunko imprint.
5. Tionishia (Monster Musume / Everyday Life with Monster Girls)
Tionisha, known as Tio to her friends, is an ogre monster girl. She is far taller, stronger, and more curvaceous than other monster girls. Her physical abilities easily gained her a position in Monster Ops: Neutralization as an escort and bodyguard. Despite having such a dangerous job, Tio is gentle and loving. She can also be absent-minded, which makes her all the more endearing.
Okayado began working on his monster girl-filled series on March 19th, 2012. Tokuma Shoten has released seventeen volumes thus far in the Monthly Comic Ryu magazine.
6. Solution Epsilon (Overlord)
Solution Epsilon is a slime, and one of the battle maids of the “Pleiades Six Stars.” As a slime girl, she can shape her body as she sees fit, and devour anything that she absorbs into her. This is a part of the job she enjoys, as people are simply food to her. Solution Epsilon baits men into touching her just so she can enjoy their struggles as she devours them. Despite her rather eccentric disposition, she is absolutely loyal to Ainz Ooal Gown, to the point where she desires to wash him in the bath.
Kugane Maruyama began to work on the original novel on May 9th, 2010. From July 30th, 2012, so-bin joined him on the light novel iteration. Enterbrain has currently published sixteen volumes.
7. Albis (That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime / Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken)
Albis is a lamia, a monster girl whose lower half is serpentine. Unlike other lamia in anime, Albis can change her form. She has a human form, a partial lamia form, and the full lamia form seen above. She is a fierce combatant and the leader of Eurazania’s Three Beastketeers. Albis is also “easygoing” towards Rimuru.
Fuse began writing Albs’s story on February 20th, 2013. Mitz Vah was brought on to illustrate the series on May 30th, 2014. Micro Magazine has since published twenty volumes and two extras in the GC Novels imprint.
8. Nanana Ryugajo (Nanana’s Buried Treasure)
Nanana is a ghost monster girl. She was murdered in her own room ten years before the story began. Her killer, her own alcoholic roommate with a dragon tattoo, used a magical knife that gave her an immortal soul. However, Nanana is also bound to her own room, ending her legendary adventures. She idled her time away playing video games and eating pudding. Her lonely days ended when Jugo began renting her room.
Kazuma Otorino, Akaringo, and later Non, worked on the original light novel series from January 30th, 2012 to December 28th, 2016. Enterbrain published all twelve volumes under the Famitsu Bunko imprint.
9. Mizore Shirayuki (Rosario + Vampire)
Mizore is a yuki-onna, a snow woman. She is a sensitive and quiet girl, though she is obsessed with Tsukune and determined to marry him and bear his children. As a snowwoman, Mizore has the ability to control and manipulate ice to an extreme degree. She is not seen without a lollipop, which helps to regulate her body temperature.
Akihisa Ikeda wrote and illustrated this series between April 6th, 2004 and September 22nd, 2007. Shueisha published all ten volumes in Jump Comics.
10. Mio Naruse (The Testament of Sister New Devil / Shinmai Maou no Testament)
Mio is a half-demon hybrid. Her being half-human does nothing to impede her overall abilities. For example, she managed to generate a black hole upon seeing Basara mortally injured. This is due to her demon half, as the daughter of Wilbert, the most powerful demon lord. Thanks to his power, she can rival the mightiest beings in her path. Her true power lies elsewhere, however. Mio is clearly thicc and looks great in a bikini. Also, she’s perfectly fine with Basara forming a harem.
This series was written by Tetsuto Uesu and illustrated by Nekosuke Okuma between September 29th, 2012, and March 31st, 2021. It was published in the Kadokawa Sneaker Bunko imprint, reaching thirteen volumes of thicc demons and angels.
