Why Romance Anime Will Conquer the Earth!

This Season is Filled with Relaxing Romantic Anime to Enjoy

Recently I’ve been feeling extra relaxed as I do my evening work on the J-List Twitter account while catching up on the newest episodes of anime. I realized that this season has featured more awesome romance anime series than usual, and that this was one reason I was enjoying my evenings so much. Let’s look at why romance anime seems to be taking over the industry in this blog post!

Our Cup Runneth Over With Romance Anime This Season

The Spring 2023 anime season is extra-well stocked with great romance anime series. We’ve got:

  • The Dangers In My Heart, about a class beauty who’s in love with a height-challenged boy from her class.
  • Loving Yamada at Lv999, about a university girl who gets swept off her feet by a handsome gamer.
  • A Galaxy Next Door, a relaxing show about the perfect manga assistant who’s also a space alien.
  • The dramatic girl’s love anime Yuri is My Job!, which has a well-written story I’m enjoying.
  • Season 2 of the super-chill Tonikaku Kawaii, in which we follow the happy marriage of Tsukasa and Nasa.
  • Season 2 of the popular The Ancient Magus’ Bride.
  • For people who hadn’t watched the final Kaguya-sama movie First Kiss That Never Ends, we’ve been enjoying the film split into episodes. And the ending is so glorious to watch.
  • Finally, the final episodes of Kubo Won’t Let Me Be Invisible are still airing after a production delay, meaning I get to hear Kana Hanazawa’s sweet voice in my headphones at 1 am.

Romance Anime Shall Conquer The Earth Meme

So why are romance anime seemingly taking over the world? Let’s look at some reasons!

The Emotional Connections

There’s something about watching two people falling in love, and if the story is crafted the right way, fans get a little more excited about where the story is going with each new episode.

Emotional Fan Service From The Dangers In My Heart

So Many Kinds of “Fan Service”

What’s your favorite kind of fan service? While I’m always happy to see a quick pantyshot or some bouncing boobs, what I like much more is seeing characters I’m invested in move their relationship forward just a little bit.

This can take many forms. Maybe there’s some small progression in the characters’ situation, as one signals their feelings to the other. Maybe one will let something slip that they were trying to keep hidden, or just come out and confess their feelings without warning. It’s so much fun to cheer for the characters from the sidelines.

Romance Anime Around The World Romance Anime Connects Us to Otakus All Over the World

It’s funny how often I grab some anime screenshots for the J-List Twitter feed but have to find new ones because the images I found were subtitled in Indonesian or Spanish or Thai. It’s a reminder that anime has become a truly global phenomenon, able to affect fans deeply no matter what country they’re in. I love being a part of the global otaku movement.

It’s a Golden Age for Romance Anime Adaptations

Because I’m too busy to be a regular reader of manga, I usually just browse the Internet for manga-related memes, knowing that anything that’s going to eventually get an anime adaption will first show up on my radar in the form of manga-based memes. Popular manga that eventually got anime, like Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out!, Komi Can’t Communicate and Jahy-sama Wa Kujikenai were all telegraphed years ahead of time thanks to the hundreds of memes that were shared by fans.

The engine driving this is, of course, social media. Fans who are super excited to see where their favorite manga’s story is going will share cropped manga pages and memes online, and naturally get other fans on board. Eventually enough critical mass builds up, and all fans get a great new anime to geek out over. Everybody wins!
