At this point, Promare might just be screening in theaters forever. After debuting in Japan back in May of last year, the Studio Trigger and XFLAG produced anime film has been consistently blowing up theaters across Japan and America since then with numerous limited-time screening events. The standard theater screenings were followed up by special 4DX screening events. Then, those 4DX screenings returned once more in Japan on February 14th with exclusive side-story animations aired alongside the film in theaters for the first time. Now, fans of the hot-blooded firefighter anime event of 2019 can feast their eyeballs on those exclusive side-story animations as well, as Promare is returning to America this April.
GKIDS announced that the film will be returning to theaters across America, with English-subtitled screenings on April 7th and English-dubbed screenings on April 8th. The new “complete” screenings of Promare will include the Side: Galo and Side: Lio prequel anime shorts, as well as a special message from director Hiroyuki Imaishi.
Back during the original film debut of Promare in May of 2019, fans who attended the debut in Japan were given a special URL and passcode that allowed them to watch the Galo-hen (Side: Galo) prequel online. Later on, different screenings of the film gave out a code and URL to instead let theater-goers stream the Lio-hen (Side: Lio) short. This will be the first time the two shorts are screened in theaters in America, though, and likely the first time many U.S. fans will be seeing them at all.
Here’s the official synopsis of Promare, according to American film distributor GKIDS:
Thirty years has passed since the appearance of the Burnish, a race of flame-wielding mutant beings, who destroyed half of the world with fire. When a new group of aggressive mutants calling themselves Mad Burnish appears, the epic battle between Galo Thymos, a new member of the anti-Burnish rescue team Burning Rescue, and Lio Fotia, the leader of Mad Burnish begins.
