Doesn’t Japan have the best special days? Today, September 6, has been designated as #黒タイツの日 or Black Tights Day by the Internet, a day to celebrate the glory of how smooth, silky black tights look wrapped around a pair of sexy legs. As usual we love the creativity of Japan, and we’re totally on board with this concept.
When animators go to make a new character for their show, they have many choices of what kinds of features to use to differentiate that character. Clumsy or obsessive personality. Tsundere. Yandere. Has a unique item in her hair, like a fried egg hairpin. Has an unkept ahoge hair sticking up. Wears unique glasses. Another choice creators can make is to stylize their character using some kind of unique legwear, and in recent years the choice has often been sexy black tights, which become that character’s trademark.
Black tights in anime were already amazing, but the person who elevated them to a pure art form is artist Yom, who creates the most amazing amazing doujinshi filled with sexy girls wearing black tights, as well as his recent Miru Tights short animation, which brought in many new fans. To celebrate Black Tights Day I decided to pick the five best characters known for wearing sexy black tights. What do you think of my picks?
Utaha Kasumigaoka. The Saekano creators were careful to make each of the three heroines wear different kinds of black leggings, to attract different kinds of fans. Megumi wears simple under knee socks because she’s the titular “boring girlfriend,” and Eriri rocks classic “absolute zone socks.” Utaha takes it to 11, with full black pantyhose, which we naturally love.
Rosa/Mei from Pokemon. Another characters with iconic legwear is Rosa/Mei from the Pokemon games and anime. So cute and genki!
Yui Hirasawa. Her stockings have always been a part of her personality, and we love them.
Homura Akemi. She starts out as a pure and shy girl who needs to be protected by Madoka, and the simple knee socks she wears are a sign of her inexperience. As her character progresses in badass-ery, her socks change into complete black stockings.
Yuiko Okuzumi. The homeroom teacher from the ingenious Miru Tights anime by Yom. She made many fantasies come true and became an overnight fan favorite.
