The recent trend in female isekai has been otome game players finding themselves reincarnated as the villainess meeting a dark end. My Next Life as a Villainess has a movie this December after two fun seasons. I’m the Villainess, So I’m Taming the Final Boss had a similar plot but tickled all the hetero romance conventions. The Most Heretical Last Boss Queen: From Villainess to Savior was this summer’s male harem version of the otomege villainess isekai plot. But where is our ecchi anime? Gushing Over Magical Girls gets us halfway there.
Its premise is quick to tell: Instead of a mysterious mascot forcing cute girls into magical girl torture porn like Puella Magi Madoka Magica, a weird creature finds a shy fan girl of her city’s magical girls and turns her into their next demon lord foe! But any chance to get up close to her favorite heroines in colorful outfits will work, even if the demon lord has to wear a skimpy outfit and fight them. Gushing Over Magical Girls is not the sexier sequel of the slice-of-life Machikado Mazoku. Little Miss Demon Lord found her kink switch and snapped it stuck into the on position. Heavy breathing while wearing pasties comes to your small screen this January.
Mahou Shoujo Renaissance
The anime world recently saw a resurgence in unironic magical girl shows. The Pretty Cure girls never left us. But we had a deconstructed heroine group save otakus and Akihabara in Mahou Shoujo Magical Destroyers, a reboot in Tokyo Mew Mew New, and the previously mentioned Machikado Mazoku. The time was ripe for an anime for men of culture. This is where Gushing Over Magical Girls (魔法少女にあこがれて, Mahou Shoujo ni Akogarete) comes in. Adapted from Akihiro Ononaka’s ongoing manga, a pasty-wearing villainess and her partners in skimpy outfits will declare love for frilly magical transformations and dress battle damage. Asahi Production will produce the anime under Atsushi Ootsuki, best known for directing To LOVE-Ru, Ladies versus Butlers!, and Kanokon. I expect great ecchiness!
Let’s Gush over Magical Girls!
The production committee timed the announcement of more cast members with its latest preview. The magical girls defend the city against an evil organization. A mysterious mascot chooses girls with hidden character defects. Our bashful, socially anxious lead character has the best qualification — she’s a sadistic dominatrix! Will her magical heroines enjoy her new brand of tortured love? Let’s find out if they’re worthy.
The Bad Guys?
Utena Hiiragi / Evil Female Executive — Fuuka Izumi (Rin Rin from HIGHSPEED Étoile). The shy, ordinary girl longs to join the mahou shoujo group Magia. A mysterious magical mascot tricks her into becoming a leader in the evil organization the magical girls fight against! But doing so unleashes her secret sadistic, kinky side.
Kiwi Araga / Leopard — Aoi Koga (Kaguya Shinomiya from Kaguya-sama: Love Is War). A firearms and explosives expert who transfers into Utena’s class. She loves her new evil leader. A lot!
Korisu Morino / Nero Alice — Shiori Sugiura (Ririka Kenzaki from Hibike! Euphonium). A quiet, younger girl who joins Utena and Kiwi’s evil team. She plays with dolls. As weapons!
Venalita — Misato Fukuen (Miyuki Hoshizora from Soaring Sky! Pretty Cure). The mascot of an evil organization intent on ruling the world tricked Utena into taking evil magic executive powers. Venalita saw the potential strength in Utena’s sadism and had to have it so it could take over the world!
The Good Girls?
Haruka Hanabishi / Magia Magenta — Kaori Maeda (Nice Nature from Uma Musume: Pretty Derby). The pink drill-haired girl is Utena’s classmate and a Tres Magia member. The friendly girl always says hi to the shy Utena.
Sayo Minakami / Magia Azul — Mayuko Kazama (Yui Yashiya from Rokudo’s Bad Girls). Utena’s classmate and the Tres Magia member hides a secret side a shrine maiden shouldn’t have. Who could satisfy a sadistic dominatrix’s needs? Sayo might know!
Kaoruko Tenkawa / Magia Sulfur — Misaki Ikeda (Bit character from Majo no Tabitabi). The two-faced classmate of Utena, Haruka, and Sayo calmly speaks with a Kyoto accent in public but has an aggressive, foul mouth in private and with her Tres Magia teammates.
Evil Organizations Played for Laughs
You know the comedic formula of Gushing Over Magical Girls if you watched Love After World Domination, The Great Jahy Will Not be Defeated!, or World Conquest Zvezda Plot. The stakes aren’t high, bureaucracy is a constant source of humor, and we watch until the next fanservice scene. The hook for the upcoming anime comes from sexual kinks and subverted expectations. My body is ready!
