Ah, ecchi anime. There was a time long ago when we were so pure of heart that we didn’t know such a thing could exist in the world. Then we encountered some fanservice-heavy anime at an impressionable age, and things would never be the same. What was your first ecchi anime experience?
This week marks a very special celebration for the U.S., and J-List is getting into the proper spirit with a big July 4 Sale. Celebrate with 15% off all in-stock products shipping from Japan through Monday, July 6. Start browsing here!
Why is Ecchi Anime Great?
While all anime has the occasional panty shot or quick fanservice scene, often to draw fans in for the first episode only, there’s a whole genre of shows where the sexy situations are the whole point of the show. If the fanservice is fresh and innovative enough, the result can be glorious, or at least a fun way to relax at the end of the day.
I’ve argued before that ecchi is better than full-bore hentai because it features characters in sexy situations, but has to use restraint to keep things within the right boundaries. This challenge makes for better and more creative writing and more interesting characters.

What Was Your First Ecchi Anime? J-List Customers Respond!
I asked J-List customers to share their own first ecchi anime with us, and here are the replies we got!
Oh man, it was Rosario + Vampire. Wow, this takes me back.
Heaven’s Lost Property. It made quite an impression on me at the time.
Remember Kanokon? That was my first, and I’ll never forget it.
My first ecchi anime was Motto To Love-ru. My mom caught me watching this on her tablet.
It was Ranma 1/2. It aired for the first time in Mexico around ’97, shown in the so-called family hours in the afternoon without any censorship, since nobody expected a “cartoon” to show nudes. There was an anti-anime campaign by parents, and the station was forced to censor it and remove a few episodes.
Does making ecchi anime doom anime studios to bankruptcy? Here’s a blog post on this subject!

Tenchi Muyou. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing on the screen.
Please Teacher/Onegai Sensei. That was my introduction to the genre, and I went on to buy ecchi manga like Love Hina and Tenchi Muyo.
The first ecchi I watched was Green Green. It was amazing back in 2003.
Kiss x Sis. Don’t ask why…if you know, you know.
My first ecchi was Nande Kokoni Sensei Ga!?That was an amazing place to begin my journey as a fan.
Sci-Fi Channel anime night was my intro to anime and to Tenchi Muyo.
What Was Peter’s First Sexy Anime?
Growing up in the 1970s, I came under the influence of anime at an early age, devouring Speed Racer and Kimba the White Lion alongside the tokusatsu shows of that era. My introduction to ecchi anime was when I hunted down the Macross 1984: Do You Remember Love? film and got to see animated boobs for the first time.
Another series that made a deep impression on me was Tatakae! Iczer-1. This show had it all: classic robot battles, horror, demonic Cthulhoid aliens and my first-ever naked anime lesbians. Watch it, if you haven’t already!
