Eve plays golf with Rose in a sudden death match play. Rose surprises Eve with a familiar golf style.
Episode 7 – “Purple (Aoi) Bullet”
Hmm.
BIRDIE WING did an incredible job of foreshadowing Rose’s injury to force a handicap on her match with Eve. I thought the story aimed at conventional sports injuries like back problems or a hip sprain. However, the cracks showing up in Rose’s reaction shots hinted at glass cracking. That turned out to be the case, but the image is a metaphor for anything fragile about to fail. Even Leo’s reappearance added to the exciting cliffhanger because he predicted Eve would win. Something about working for the mob lowered Rose’s chances of winning. What did he know? Uh, how about a video game sci-fi plot twist! We’ve seen Catherine’s Death Star Golf Course and the quality of Japanese VR golf in BIRDIE WING. So, it was reasonable to expect the Nafrece version of Luke Skywalker’s bionic hand.
The Japanese episode title is 葵色の弾丸 (Aoi Iro no Dangan, Aoi-Colored Bullet). Crunchyroll includes Aoi in the subtitles but adds “purple” to match what Eve named her new color bullet. Ao, or aoi, is not exactly blue, but more like blue-green. So, the episode title was a head-scratcher because Eve already had a Blue Bullet and a Green Bullet. The BIRDIE WING title pointed to Aoi, the Japanese golfing girl, teaching Eve her fade shot. Eve claims to have seven colors of the rainbow. We’ve seen Blue for drives, Red for high approaches, Green for putts, Yellow for bunker saves, and Purple for fades. I’m still waiting for orange and indigo.
Heh.
BIRDIE WING starts with a flashback. Rose wanted Eve to ripen as a golf opponent. Anri hated the competition. The way Rose talks about Eve sounds like there’s a personal history behind the attitude. Rose describes it as pride and sentimentality. Hey! The opening credits changed the logo on the golf ball to Vipère’s for the mystery golf girl.
And back to Catherine’s evil golf lair. It feels like a Gundam should launch out from somewhere when BIRDIE WING starts moving these turbines and railcars. Eve loads her bullet with feelings from her adoptive family. Now, let’s see how Rose Aleon plays golf. Wow! She plays with Color Bullets too! Crimson Rose Bullet! Rose hits harder than Eve. Catherine calls Rose the Crimson Lady. Eve recognized Rose’s golfing style was the same as hers! Leo taught them both. Rose is Eve’s golfing older sister.
Vipère worried if Rose rattled Eve, but Eve reassured the Snake Woman. Rose’s golf is exciting. Her ball keeps kissing the lip of the cup. BIRDIE WING is selling golf balls and markers in this episode. I want to play this golf video game! Hahaha! Eve landed her Red Bullet on the top of the flag! Oh, snap! Rose bopped Eve’s ball. This is crazy, superhuman golf.
BIRDIE WING takes a breather from heart-stopping golf to check in with Klein’s bar. Ooh. It’s Leo! He’s a charmer. Leo came to Nafrece for someone else besides Eve. Oh? Who? His other student? Leo is not a name-dropper, but he is a hint dropper. He thinks Eve will win because she never played for the mafia. Meanwhile, Eve and Rose keep their sudden death match play going on. Uh oh. Catherine thinks she got Eve’s number. The Golf Death Star made a hole with a dogleg to the right. It looks like the hole Eve played against Aoi in the second episode of BIRDIE WING. How will she blast a golf ball through a rock face? Oho. Eve claims she has seven colors of rainbow bullets. What color will she use? Aoi! With a purple streak! It’s turning in the air. She faded the golf ball! When did she learn to do that?
Ahahaha! Rose caused her downfall! If she hadn’t made Eve play VR golf with Aoi, Eve wouldn’t have made Aoi show her how to slice her golf swing! Eve calls her new swing “Curved Shot Purple Bullet.” Uh oh. Rose hurt herself! The crack in the screen means something. Did Rose retire because of a back injury? Did it flare up because she hasn’t played this much golf in a long time? Eve feels she has the advantage in the mental game. Vipère also caught the change in Rose’s power. BIRDIE WING wants us to pay attention to Rose putting her hand in her right pocket. Hip injury?
We’ve gone to nine holes in a sudden deathmatch. That’s tiring physically and mentally. Eve makes an emotionally stronger Blue Bullet. Long drive! Melodramatic Catherine collapses from stress. Ooh. Epilogue time in BIRDIE WING. Rose had a falling out with Leo. Over what? Playing for the mob? Rose’s extra effort will force an injury. Big crack. Oh no. Rose’s elbow? What? She broke her prosthetic arm! Dramatic sci-fi cliffhanger!
Next time, Leo rescues Rose! And other things happen!
