Sakura Kinomoto: A Classic Lolita Cosplay
Lolita fashion is (like all the best things) a Japanese invention from the ’80s and ‘90s, as part of a broader attempt at reinterpreting Western fashion through a uniquely Japanese lens. Lace-trimmed petticoats and elegant silhouettes, borrowing from the Victorian and rococo-era fashion of the late nineteenth century, became the core of lolita fashion.
Sakura Kinomoto from Cardcaptor Sakura is the poster child of early lolita design in anime and manga. With her white ruffles and oversized bows, Sakura is the picture-perfect representation of “classic” lolita fashion. This design would later become the inspiration for magical girl parodies, like Puella Magi Madoka Magica (featured later in this list), Fate/Kaleid Liner, and Magical Girl Ore, among others.

Kurumi Tokisaki: The Textbook Gothic Lolita Cosplay
Did you grow up listening to My Chemical Romance or Linkin Park unironically? Then your tastes might align with the “gothic lolita” subgenre. With a color palette of deep reds and blacks, oftentimes featuring thorns and chokers, goth lolitas have a little edge to their design.
Kurumi Tokisaki of Date A Live fits that description to a T, and that’s without mentioning her penchant for the overdramatic. Tokisaki is undoubtedly the best girl from Date A Live, and you can own her in all her regal glory. J-List has a range of Date A Live products, including the stunning Kurumi Tokisaki KDcolle Figure Empress Ver.

Stocking Anarchy: Gothic Lolita Turns Punk
There’s a more-than-pure gothic lolita fashion to Stocking Anarchy from Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt. As a human, her rebellious attitude and striped stockings bring a punk element that pushes her into “elegant gothic lolita.” Some credit the subculture’s creation to Japanese musician Mana, who founded the clothing brand Moi-même-Moitié.
In her angel form, Stocking Anarchy flips the script and goes white with pastel-blue stripes. This fashion, called “Sweet Lolita,” is the polar opposite of “Gothic Lolita.”

Madoka Kaname: Cotton Candy Lolita Cosplay
Puella Magi Madoka Magica traumatized an entire generation of unsuspecting viewers by trampling on our childhood memories of magical girls and magical animals. Thankfully, the fashion is delightful, and Madoka Kaname herself is the perfect combination of a magical girl and “Sweet Lolita.”
Madoka’s design takes obvious inspiration from Classic Lolita designs, like Sakura Kinomoto. The overload of pastel pinks and frilly lace pushes Madoka’s design into the “Cotton Candy” subgenre. If only the series itself was as sweet as Madoka’s outfit!

Beatrice: Sweet and Hime Lolita Combine
The Great Spirit of the Archives from Re:ZERO is pretty and perfect in every way. Her exaggerated bows and ruffles, along with her signature blonde ringlets, are a solid mixture of both Sweet Lolita and Hime (Princess) Lolita. Hime lolita fashion also tends to include tiaras and tea-party vibes, and there’s nothing more distinctive about Beatrice than her love of books and tea.
