Being the least respected man in a dungeon city might have its advantages. Nobody bothers watching someone they’ve already written off. That’s the aim of a supposed freeloader who secretly protects the princess knight who pays his bills in The Kept Man of the Princess Knight (姫騎士様のヒモ, Himekishi-sama no Himo). The gritty take on dungeon-crawling adventure begins airing in January 2027.

The Kept Man of the Princess Knight Weaponizes a Bad Reputation
The Kept Man of the Princess Knight takes place in Gray Neighbor, a chaotic dungeon city. Buried treasure in its labyrinth attracts adventurers and feeds the darkness surrounding them. Arwin, the Crimson Princess Knight, leads her party underground, seeking a legendary treasure that could restore her destroyed kingdom.
Matthew appears to contribute nothing. He lives on Arwin’s money and accepts the contempt that comes with looking useless. Behind that reputation, the former adventurer secretly works on her behalf. The Kept Man of the Princess Knight is fantasy adventure noir. Arwin pursues her kingdom’s restoration openly, while Matthew protects her from the shadows through far less honorable methods.

A Noir Lens Turns Familiar Genres Dark
The Kept Man of the Princess Knight drags dungeon fantasy into territory familiar to fans of No Guns Life. J-List’s review of that cyberpunk noir follows a hard-boiled protagonist through a grimy city dominated by corporate power. Gray Neighbor replaces the machinery with dungeon treasure, but Matthew’s shadow work gives its adventure a similarly uneasy atmosphere.
The burning-ship opening in my Fena: Pirate Princess review also showed how harsh violence could cut through a familiar treasure-hunting adventure. The Kept Man of the Princess Knight builds its darker contrast around Arwin’s honorable goal and Matthew’s willingness to do the ugly work supporting it.
Part of the dark underbelly of shadow work is how Matthew builds his reputation to act as a cloak and shield. Whoring, boozing, and gambling take time and resources, so we’ll see those back alley elements through the women around the princess knight’s kept man. Some, apparently, harbor resentments.
