We love childish tantrums. If the child is cute. And not ours. So, you’ll be happy to hear that a new Anya Forger dropped. This one’s defective. If you’re ready for an adorable four-year-old with top-tier, death-wish-defying powers; an overprotective, dagger-packing, romance-addicted maid; a deeply disturbing dark secret involving a child’s soul; and some good-old-fashioned sword geekery, then here’s why Nia Liston: The Merciless Maiden should top your watch list this season.

Expectations of a Merciless Maiden, Maids, and Murder
I searched “maid” and got an adorable psycho, relatable parenting jokes, sword porn, and a wholesome but deadly maid with a romance addiction. So, I’ve got my cake, but the proof of the pudding is in the eating. And we’ve got a whole season before we confirm successful cake ingestion.
I have three main expectations going into Nia Liston: The Merciless Maiden:
- Four, Sorta. Nia Liston is a woman in a four-year-old’s body, which could get weird. I don’t want a ride on the Loli Bus. I also won’t spend my precious seconds watching a painfully bratty child (here’s looking at you, Tatsumaki). I’m also out if we see Nia beaten on screen, although I expect she has age armor stacked on top of her plot armor. I’ll stick around for Anya-levels of cute comedy and jokes built for parents of young kids.
- Soulful Animation. The trailer’s animation and Episode 1 drew us into Merciless Maiden’s potential emotional depth. Will we get a touching story about second chances, or a disturbing tale of violence perpetrated by a knee-high sociopath? And will the animation hold the story together deep into the season, whichever route the story takes? Any adaptation is a chance for the story to stand alone, so I’m not counting on the light novel or manga to answer this question.
- Dark Death Wish Drama. A doctorate-packing psychologist could get rich writing about suicide themes in anime. And Nia has a Valkyrie’s longing for death in battle. Sure, that’s not suicide, but how far is too close? I’m not going to pretend to understand the Japanese mentality on suicide, but I hope Nia’s death wish stays entertaining. Flirting with that dark line will determine if this anime is good. Or great.
So then, how does Nia Liston: The Merciless Maiden stack up so far?
Nia Liston: Worries of a White-Haired Warrior
Nia Liston starts with a satisfyingly dark premise. A legendary warrior who once killed a god is dying. She wishes she’d met someone strong enough to kill her. A real test of her skills. Then a shady figure shunts her soul into the body of a Nia Liston, a sickly young noblewoman. That staid narou-kei isekai resurrection trope, reworked this way, hits a perfectly grim note that sets my expectations high.
Nia Liston is now a cute celebrity-in-the-making and a capable, deadly warrior who’s happiest when someone’s trying to kill her.
In the same way that Anya Forger’s psychic-fueled misunderstandings feed Spy X Family’s jokes, Nia’s young appearance and consummate skills should provide the scaffolding for Nia Liston: The Merciless Maiden’s comedy. That makes Nia more like Yor, really.
Maid Rinokis, Nia Liston’s Wholesome Murder Maid
Then there’s Rinokis Funk.
Yes, a name written purely for anime bloggers with a comedic bent. Nia Liston: The Merciless Maiden really does deliver.
“Hipokiss” is devoted to her mistress, obsessed with TV, and hides knives under her maid uniform. And we’ve got an academic interest in the underside of maid uniforms. If popping a Funko doesn’t keep you watching, then the dynamic between Nia and Rin might. “Elicuss” tops my waifu list so far this season for her pure wholesomeness.
Nia Liston: Production and Cast Details
Nia Liston: The Merciless Maiden is based on Umikaze Minamino’s light novels, which were adapted into manga by Minamino, with illustrations by Kabuto Kodai. KONAMI Animation is producing the anime, with Motoki Nakanishi (Love Is Indivisible by Twins) directing, and Gigaemon Ichikawa (The Fruit of Evolution) handling series composition.
Honoka Inoue voices Nia, while Fūka Izumi plays “Rhinitis.” The supporting cast includes Rina Honnizumi, Rina Hidaka, Taku Yashiro, Yoko Hikasa, and Satoshi Hino.
The anime premiered in Japan on October 6, 2026, and is planned for two consecutive cours. You can watch Nia Liston: The Merciless Maiden on Hidive.
Episode 1. A Good Start for Nia Liston: The Merciless Maiden
Episode 1 left me excited for the rest of the season. We’ll have to see how Nia Liston plays out over the next few episodes. Part of my excitement comes from all the questions I have.
I need to know why the dying warrior looked exactly like Nia. Did the resurrected soul paint her new body over her most recent memory?
Why the TV star subplot? I’m not a fan of everyday tech reimagined in fantasy unless it makes sense for the story. I guess that her nobility and stardom will combine to bring out every enemy from the oppressed masses. Hints of revolution are evident in Episode 1.
And when will “Flunk” whip those daggers out of her garter?
Give Nia Liston: The Merciless Maiden a watch for Nia and “Punk’s” fun power-dynamic mismatch, for the beautiful fight scenes, and for the satisfying isekai-not-isekai murder misfit’s antics.
