Either way, it’s caused me a great deal of dissatisfaction. However, on the very rare occasion when I think something is subpar and that “subpar thing” proves me wrong, my delight is unmatched. And I’m Dating a Dark Summoner reminded me that the gloomier a soul, the greater its capacity for enjoyment. I went in expecting garbage, and I walked out with a chunk of gold.

Honestly, Dark Summoner to Dekiteiru was the fall anime I was most excited for. But the trailers quickly robbed me of that excitement. The anime’s movement seemed so stiff. It wasn’t at the level of The Way of the Househusband, but when characters talk and interact, it had a PowerPoint vibe. Despite that, when I watched the first episode, I laughed so hard my abdomen started to hurt.
Then I realized HIDIVE had the balls to air I’m Dating a Dark Summoner uncensored. That epiphany gave my life a +10-year boost. My MP and HP are overflowing, and they’re heading to the same place…
I’m Dating a Dark Summoner Synopsis
Some people say that religious fervor corrodes the brain. The more fanatical you are in your beliefs, the easier it is for you to overlook things. For the priest Roni, that statement is painfully true. Instead of rejoicing that his party finally got a new fighter, the holy man complained about their new companion being a dark summoner. According to him, it’s an affront to God that his party relies on someone who fights with demons.
To him, his new comrade Amona might as well be a devil! She might as well be a succubus! After all, she looks like one with her bold golden horns, dark eyes, voluptuous body, and sultry smile.
But whether he likes it or not, Roni has to get along with her. So, his captain forces them to spend time together so they can talk out their differences. However, once the two share a room, their so-called differences turn out to be nothing more than sexual tension! And they do their best to relieve it!
First Impressions
I loved Nyan Pollution-ω-‘s work on Hanisuka. Likewise, Studio AtoriE’s animation on Umayuru: Full Gate! is endearing. So, Kashou would have thought those two studios would give I’m Dating a Dark Summoner an SSR-level adaptation. But that’s not the case. It would be an exaggeration to call Dark Summoner to Dekiteiru’s animation the worst of the season. However, the show seems slow.
Sometimes, you watch an anime and think, “They really had to stretch the budget.” This is one of those shows. Even so, I’m Dating a Dark Summoner is surprisingly expressive — the characters don’t just cycle through the same few facial expressions.
Luckily, the anime doesn’t suffer from questionable voice acting.
You can tell that the voice cast enjoyed their work. Weebs are rarely treated to anime with sex in it. It’s usually implied, cut, or straight-up hentai. I’m Dating a Dark Summoner took a more “adult-oriented HBO drama” approach to lovemaking. That approach will make weebs happy, but it’s uncomfortable for VAs. That may be because the whole cast is made up of R18 VAs or newbies, and that’s a shame. Even if this kind of anime isn’t for you, you’d know the VAs were godly. Senmai Houdentei (Imp) can give Kenjirou Tsuda a run for any baritone role. Rei Takano (Amona) and Yuuki Nishiyama (Roni) didn’t fornicate in the studio, but it sounds like it. And for ecchi-heavy anime like I’m Dating a Dark Summoner, that immersion is invaluable.
The Best Way to Know Someone Is to Fuck Them
Religion plays a big role in I’m Dating a Dark Summoner. And there’s a deep irony in an anime about a priest fornicating with a “demon,” having the best social commentary of the season. Yet here we are.
Violently run your fingers over a map, pick a continent, and there’s a place there where people are killing (or have killed) each other over religion. And in all those places people of “opposing beliefs” love each other, shag each other, and raise families together. People use their holy books to justify hate all the time. But every religious text tells people to love one another. In fact,…

See where I’m going? If not, I’m read up on plenty of religious texts (perks of existential suffering). I can preach better than any evangelist. In I’m Dating a Dark Summoner, it’s religion that makes Roni loathe Amona. And it’s religion that causes his mental suffering. And much like in the real world — the moment his fanaticism is set aside, and the “enemy” is treated like one’s kin, love and respect quickly bloom. (I bet you never expected to read that on J-List.)
Kudos to I’m Dating a Dark Summoner for including the post-coital awkwardness. I know it when I see it, and Roni and Amona’s depiction was a 10/10.
Overall (Horny) Thoughts
I sure hope that my remarks about Dark Summoner to Dekiteiru’s animation didn’t cost this anime a single view. There’s gold in these here hills (*points to Amona’s oppai*).
I’m Dating a Dark Summoner won’t dazzle anyone with its animation, but it has enough subtext and comedy to entertain. And if you’re only in it for the lewdness, you won’t be disappointed. Sure, it doesn’t show penetration, and that will irk the horniest among us. But dear God, when Amona bent over in her bunny suit and slid her panties to the side, I nearly died. I felt the excitement-induced heart attack creeping up on me.

Unfortunately, no English publishing house has licensed the manga. Hopefully that will change soon.
