Rarely do we get a new adaptation based on something other than a novel or manga. Arcanadea is based on Kotobukiya’s waifu figure line about girls from a fantasy VRMMO appearing in the real world. We don’t get enough of these sorts of series, and we must support them when we do. This one kind of reminds me of Angelic Layer, where the waifus there were all cute and Tinkerbell-sized, too. Except the girls in this series actually move on their own.

The anime will air sometime in January 2027. Yokohama Animation Laboratory animates the adaptation, with Keiichiro Kawaguchi as director. Atsuhiro Tomioka writes the series, Kumoha Arakawa designs the characters using necömi’s original designs as a template, and both Yuki Hayashi and Yuki Furuhashi provide the music.
A gamer, his angel, and a friendly demon are as follows:
- Shogo Kuga — Nobunaga Shimazaki (Mahito from Jujutsu Kaisen). Shogo was once a popular VRMMO gamer.
- Lumitea — Kaede Hondo (Nanjamo/Iono from Pokémon Horizons: The Series). Lumitea is a kind angel from the new VRMMO game and Shogo’s familiar.
- Velretta — Miho Okasaki (Teruko from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba). Velretta is a mischievous demon from the new VRMMO and one of Kaho Asagi’s familiars.

Mystical Energy Blends Reality and Digital in Arcanadea
The trailer really does remind me of Angelic Layer, where the two human characters we meet get their own tiny waifus. It’s obviously not the same; these tiny girls are sentient beings who move on their own, while the Angels of Angelic Layer are tiny figures that only move when the humans wear headsets to move them with their minds. Shogo Kuga meets his tiny angel waifu, Lumitea, when she falls from the sky, and we get those classic and cultured camera angles.
An explosion seems to have mixed the online game and real life, blending sci-fi and fantasy. This reminded me of Devils’ Crest, only without all of the needless pain and misery. I’m eager to see this anime premiere, find out how they blend sci-fi and fantasy, and why that girl gets two tiny waifus, and Shogo only gets one.
A Closer Look at Arcanadea
Arcanadea anime summary:
The “sci-fi x fantasy” franchise takes place in the near future, where the world experienced rapid technological development thanks to a new energy called “Arcana Particles” that was discovered by Eden Industries. The new technology includes the largest virtual space server called Eden. The VRMMO “ARCANADEA” is a game people can play within the Eden server, and features a fantasy world. After an explosion occurred at Eden Industries one night during the maintenance of Eden, the world changed, including abnormal weather, communication issues, strange disappearances, and people gaining increased physical abilities.
Kotobukiya released the original Arcanadea bishojo figure series in December 2021. Lead character designer necömi designed them with a fantasy angle rather than the mecha girl style used in prior figure sets. Jako provided art for the Arcanadea: Burning Bright! manga adaptation, which debuted on June 10th, 2026.
Vivion provided art for the Arcanadea: Cross Connect manga adaptation, which debuted on August 14th, 2026, in Comipo Comics.
