My fellow J-List faithful, today is a day worth celebrating! We’re getting an anime adaptation of the foodie travel manga, NABETAMA: Getting Shots on a Frying Pan (Nabe ni Tama o Ukenagara)! J.C. Staff, the studio behind 2.5 Dimensional Seduction, will animate the upcoming NABETAMA adaptation, which will premiere next year. The anime’s production staff released a character visual for Juntaro, the story’s lead character.
NABETAMA: Getting Shots on a Frying Pan Synopsis and Deets
Nabe ni Tama o Ukenagara is a gourmet “non-fiction” manga written by Juntaro Aoki and illustrated by Shin Moriyama. Comic Newtype (a Kadokawa Shoten website) has serialized the manga since May 2021. Kadokawa has compiled the NABETAMA into five wideban volumes. Comic Newtype also serializes a spin-off manga, Nabe ni Tama o Ukenagara Transit by Aoki-sensei and Hirota Takahara. Unfortunately, no one publishes the English version of NABETAMA: Getting Shots on a Frying Pan.
NABETAMA follows Juntaro Aoki, a devoted angler who has the “unfortunate” luck of growing up in one of Japan’s worst ghettos. But like anyone who’s ever wandered into a crowded, dingy roadside kitchen at 3 a.m., Juntaro will tell you: punishing circumstances inspire culinary art. So, Juntaro travels far and wide to visit the roughest cities to sample the local cuisine. But, unlike Anthony Bourdain, who sees the good in everyone he meets, Juntaro only sees anime girls. Because of Umamusume, every time I see a horse I’m now doomed to think “that would be hot as an anime girl.” So, I can really vibe with this anime.

Go Live Your Life
Juntaro from NABETAMA: Getting Shots on a Frying Pan is the anime version of me. I’m too much of a misanthrope to travel often for food. But I know I’ll die in a remote part of Latin America or Africa chasing and fishing tarpon. I’ve experienced firsthand how pushing into danger to get what I want can be crazy exhilarating. And that rush of adrenaline that comes with it is something I know all too well. Plus, I, too, see the world through a “cute anime girl filter.” In my mind, every minute I spent with my ex, I was with Kyoko from D4DJ. But as they say in Japan, kore wa kore, and sore wa sore.
Say you haven’t found the thing that you’d risk life and sanity for. Life colors your world in 9–5 routines and McDonald’s. NABETAMA: Getting Shots on a Frying Pan is a show you should watch — it’s going to help you shake out of any uncomfortable routine. Often, you need something to stoke passion in your soul, something that makes you wander and wonder. Like Renako in Watanare, you need something to love! Thankfully, we stock Kamimura Nabia’s Watanare-inspired Where Two Angels’ Wings Cross. And thanks to our partnership with FAKKU!, we now sell bangers like Shibasaki Shouji’s Special Days and Kindatsu’s If I Let Her Ruin My Life. If none of those doujins make your heart beat faster, there’s little need for it to beat at all.
