Do you remember your first non-excessively ecchi rom-com? My first was NetoYome. I’m still so fond of it that I re-watch it a couple of times a year. I love rom-coms with innuendos, crude humor, tsundere behavior, and perfectly peppered fan service. But those are outliers. Most rom-coms have an MC that’s physically incapable of getting a boner and drags out confessions longer than GTA VI’s development time. These shows use well-trodden tropes as gimmicks instead of embracing them. It’s lamentable, and it’s insulting. Thankfully, anime like Mistress Kanan Is Devilishly Easy still champions the slightly pervy rom-coms of old!
Kanan-sama wa Akumade Choroi has massive oppai, loads of blushing, a male MC who was ready to smash after five minutes, and diabetes-inducing flirting. There are horny demons! There are virgin demons! But most of all, THERE ARE HORNY VIRGIN DEMONS!!! Kanan Choroi will infuriate people who hate tsunderes, but it added +150 stamina and +50 wit to my life. And most people reading this will agree with me.

Mistress Kanan Is Devilishly Easy — The Power of Misunderstandings
What would you do if a busty, horny (ha!) bishoujo senpai told you something like “I want to devour you” and “It’s going to be raw?” If you’re Youji Kyougi, you’d take it at face value, strip, and get ready for some nakadachi action. Unfortunately for him, his Artemis III wasn’t going to reach the moon. Unbeknownst to the horny, go-getting lad, the girl standing before him meant it literally. (Quick tangent — always remember, when you get sucked by a succubus, she sucks more than you know). Moving on….
Misunderstanding usually invites grief, but in Youji’s case, his misunderstanding of doodling a sexy senpai worked to his advantage. His zeal managed to charm his senpai Kanan Takakiyo. What Youji didn’t know was that his charm and gusto actually saved him! Kanan is a demon that infiltrated his school to feast on human souls, and he was going to be her victim. But instead of feasting on Youji, their grand misunderstanding led to Kanan dating him!
“But Kashou, what’s the fun in having a couple in episode one?” Fret not, ye heathens. Mistress Kanan Is Devilishly Easy will still give rom-coms’ greatest hits:
- “If we hold hands, I’ll get pregnant.”
- Predictable ecchi misunderstanding
- A tsundere calling her love interest by an insult instead of his name.
- Oppai so big you’d kill the dinosaurs if you dropped it from orbit.
- A truly kawaii waifu.
- The word “BAKA.”
How I Love Straightforward MCs
The lead characters in a rom-com drive the story. Even the best plot suffers when there’s indecisiveness. I loathe wishy-washy MCs, so Youji-kun from Mistress Kanan Is Devilishly Easy is a man after my heart. Let me tell you why.
If everything goes well for us, we have about 70 years on this rock. Normal people (unfortunately, not me) sleep through 25/26 of those years. Unless you have cool parents and money, years one through sixteen are spent in a box. Age, health, and sorrow take about five of those years. You have about 20 years to really live. Do you really want to waste that precious time hesitating? NO!
No one got to the top of Aconcagua by looking at it! When it comes to dating, it’s like Kirk Lazarus said in Tropic Thunder, “Hey baby, you and I are going on a date, end of story.” I have to legally tell you not to do that. But the sentiment stands. Despite Youji-kun’s forwardness, he always considers Kanan’s feelings and tries not to make her uncomfortable, and that makes me smile.
Banzai for Studio KAI!
A few days ago, I learned that Studio KAI filed for insolvency, and I was shocked. Sentenced to be a Hero was one of the best dark fantasy anime I’ve ever seen. Umamusume S2/3 was epic. Studio KAI even made a three-hour-long Yamaha commercial (Super Cub) entertaining. Goes to show that anime studios and animators really get shafted.
But you’re not here for doom and gloom; you’re here for Mistress Kanan Is Devilishly Easy and tsundere demons. And Studio KAI knows how to draw kyuuto tsundere demons. I place heavy emphasis on expressions, and Kanan’s are glorious. The sheer smugness and aura of her smile stimulate me. The whole anime is pleasant to look at. I always mention that I know little about animation, but I always find myself wishing a different studio had animated a show I like. I wish C-Station had animated Yuru Camp’s third season or that Doga Kobo had animated D4DJ and Bang Dream. But Studio Kai was the perfect studio for Mistress Kanan Is Devilishly Easy.
And speaking of perfect, the anime’s production team could have searched the world and not found a better fit for Kanan than Aoi Koga. Koga-san’s vocal performance radiates “flustered, love-struck, horny demon.” Likewise, Seiichirou Yamashita’s voice perfectly lends itself to Youji’s direct, enamored speech. If only more studios treated rom-coms with this amount of love.
Mistress Kanan Is Devilishly Easy — Deets
Kanan Choroi adapts the manga written and illustrated by Nonco. Weekly Shonen Magazine (Kodansha) has serialized the title since its June 2022 debut. Kodansha has compiled the manga’s individual chapters into thirteen volumes. Last year, Seven Seas Entertainment announced plans to release the English translation of the manga as a 2-in-1 omnibus. They will release the first volume in July.
