NNN is always a tough time for us cultured otaku. It’s time for us to receive our due reward for holding out for so long. Warriors and sages like us can only be rewarded by royalty. That brings us to some very honorable, and haughty, royal girls of anime. These top-tier waifus, who either sit upon thrones or truly deserve thrones, are best served as idols for the NNN warriors to worship after a month of abstaining from worldly bliss.
1. Mirellia Q Melromarc (The Rising of the Shield Hero / Tate no Yusha no Nariagari)
We start the list off with one of the best recent royal girls in anime. Mirellia is one of the few nobles in the series that actually acts noble. She recognizes that one of her daughters is a monster and that her husband is trash. Honestly, she’s damn near Best Girl in the series. Even the way she dons her armor is appealing. In addition to that, she is kind, as seen when she aids Naofumi right at the beginning of the story. Mirellia was his firm ally when everyone else was quick to slander the Shield Hero.
While she might not be a royal girl, perhaps the second Best Girl is to your liking. The Raphtalia 1/7 Figure Bikini Armor Ver. from The Rising of the Shield Hero is now available for pre-order.
Aneko Yusagi first released his novel series sometime in 2012. Media Factory obtained the publishing rights and attached the artist Seira Minami to work on the light novels. Since August 22nd, 2013, 22 volumes have been published in the MF Books imprint.
2. Aurora Suyaris Kaymin (Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle / Mao-jo de Oyasumi)
Suya is the crown princess of the Unified Human Nation of Goodereste. However, she would much rather sleep her time away. She’s not a slacker though, Suya is a capable fighter, seamstress, architect, strategist, organizer, and more. Suya has whatever skills she needs to get a good night’s sleep. She’s even manipulated the gods themselves to raise their popularity among humans to save their very existence.
Kagiji Kumanomata first released his manga series on May 11th, 2016. Shogakukan has since published 26 volumes in Weekly Shonen Sunday.
3. Peach (Super Mario Bros.)
We can’t forget one of the First Ladies of gaming. Princess Peach rules the Mushroom Kingdom with kindness and benevolence. This royal girl has, in turn, earned the Toads’ complete friendship and loyalty. Peach calls upon her allies, such as the Super Mario Brothers, whenever Bowser and his Koopas invade her kingdom. Outside of her royal duties, she is a keen fighter and athlete.
Best Genderswap Girl Bowsette would have taken this spot in an ideal world. Even if Nintendo won’t make her canon, she’s real to me and other cultured fans.
Nintendo and Shigeru Miyamoto first released Super Mario Bros. on September 13th, 1985 to the Famicom/NES.
4. Zelda (The Legend of Zelda)
Another First Lady of gaming, and a royal girl of great esteem. Princess Zelda rules Hyrule with wisdom and grace. She will sacrifice of herself to protect and preserve her people. Zelda and Hyrule have many enemies, none more terrible than Ganon. In such times, Zelda and the green hero Link rise up to fight his eternal darkness.
Shigeru Miyamoto, Takashi Tezuka, and Nintendo released The Legend of Zelda on February 21st, 1986 to the Famicom/NES.
5. Katarina Claes (HameFura: My Next Life as a Villainess )
Katarina (Bakarina to her fans) is a unique royal girl. She’s an isekai protagonist from another world. She was hit by a car (truck-kun was off that day) and ended up in a world that closely mirrors the otome game, Fortune Lover. She is the daughter of a duke and the fiancée of the crown prince. Katarina works to avoid all of the original Katarina’s Game Over flags that would result in her death or exile. She’s done such a good job of it that she accidentally formed a harem of boys and girls, though she is oblivious to this fact.
Satoru Yamaguchi first released his My Next Life as a Villainess novel on July 6th, 2014. Ichijinsha picked up the rights and hired the artist Nami Hidaka to adapt the series to the light novel format. Thirteen volumes have been released in the Ichijinsha Bunko Iris imprint.
6. Henrietta de Tristain (The Familiar of Zero / Zero no Tsukaima)
Henrietta took over as Queen of the magical kingdom of Tristain. Her father passed away under unknown circumstances, and her mother was in mourning, prompting the princess to ascend to the throne. This royal girl is kind and wise and handed the harem route flag to her isekai protagonist on a silver platter. Saito turned her away, making him one of the dumbest isekai protagonists in existence. A royal waifu with considerable power and resources was turned away! She’s too good for him. Let him keep his tsundere girl with pink hair power, the elf and maid might be better off without him.
Noboru Yamaguchi wrote, and Eiji Usatsuka illustrated this series from June 25th, 2004 to February 24th, 2017. Media Factory published 22 volumes and a side story collection in the MF Bunko J imprint.
7. Lancer (Fate/Grand Order)
This royal girl is an alternate form of Artoria Pendragon, the female King Arthur. The more familiar Artoria is of the Saber class, but this Artoria was summoned with her Holy Lance Rhongomyniad, making her a Lancer. Her history is similar to Saber’s, but she’s much more upbeat and friendly. Also, she’s taken the side of “Plot” rather than Saber’s “Justice.”
If you want a different royal girl from the Fate series, J-List can help out. The Saber/Mordred POP UP PARADE Figure is now available for purchase. This Saber of Red is Artoria’s daughter. Don’t sweat the details.
Type-Moon, led by Kinoko Nasu, released the first Fate/stay night as an adult visual novel on January 30th, 2004. Toned-down versions were released later, allowing it to reach general audiences.
8. Queen Serenity (Sailor Moon)
Queen Serenity was the ruler of the Moon Kingdom during the time of the Silver Millennium. She is also the mother of Princess Serenity/Sailor Moon, and the grandmother of Chibiusa/Sailor Chibi Moon. This tragic royal girl sacrificed her life to seal away the Dark Kingdom and reincarnate her daughter and the Sailor Senshi and give them a new chance at life. Though she passed away many years ago, Queen Serenity has made brief appearances to provide crucial information or power-ups.
Naoko Takeuchi wrote and illustrated Sailor Moon from December 28th, 1991 to February 3rd, 1997. Kodansha published all eighteen volumes in the pages of Nakayoshi.
9. Naga the Serpent (Slayers)
The smug sorceress with the best armor imaginable is also a royal girl. Naga, whose real name is Gracia Ul Naga Saillune, is the first daughter of Crown Prince Philionel El Di Saillune. She considers herself a rival to Lina, the overpowered mage with red hair. Naga is no slouch, though she is a bit of a drunk. This royal girl can wield both white and black magic, in addition to some shamanistic magic.
Hajime Kanzaka and Rui Araizumi began working on Lina’s story in 1989. Fujimi Shobo has published seventeen volumes in Dragon Magazine.
10. Elizabeth (Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere / Kyokai Senjo no Horizon)
Elizabeth is both the Queen of England and the president of Oxford Academy, so she’s two kinds of royal girl. She certainly acts like it, given her haughty and self-important attitude. Elizabeth manifests her wings, an ability granted by her title as Fairy Queen, and her half-fairy bloodline, to show off. Despite all of this, she can be kind, and her air-headed side naturally endears her to her people.
Minoru Kawakami and Satoyasu created their light novel from September 10th, 2008 to December 7th, 2018. ASCII Media Works released all 29 volumes and three spin-offs in Dengeki Bunko Magazine.
