Benten Film has once again brought storybook figures back to life with their newest anime series. After reimagining the fantastical figures in Petals of Reincarnation and granting them supernatural abilities, they’d have nowhere else to go but to European folklore with Red Riding Hood: A Detective Story (Akazukin, Tabi no Tochū de Shitai to Deau / Little Red Riding Hood Encounters a Corpse on Her Journey), a darker interpretation adapted from a novel and manga series. The reimagining is especially interesting for people who grew up with the Mouse’s versions. The Little Mermaid returned to life after her sea-foam ending, and now Little Red Riding Hood has to solve a murder mystery involving other fairy-tale characters.

Red Riding Hood: A Detective Story News, Cast, Staff
Red Riding Hood will make her way to Grandma’s house sometime in 2027. Itsuro Kawasaki sits as the director and wields the pen, and Manami Minakata and Yūko Yahiro design the characters.
Two of the famous folklore characters are as follows:
- Little Red Riding Hood — Yume Miyamoto (Nika Nanaura from Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury). Little Red Riding Hood discovers trouble whenever she ventures out.
- Pinocchio — Akira Sekine (Maryu Reage from Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?). Pinocchio is a troublesome wooden circus performer.
Benten Film will animate the anime adaptation, which has an official website and Twitter (X) and Instagram accounts promoting Red Riding Hood: A Detective Story. You can find more information about the series and the key visuals at those sites.
Don’t Get Hoodwinked! Red Riding Hood: A Detective Story
Anime versions of European folklore are simply great. Well, anime-style anything has a good chance of being very entertaining. I’m not much of a fan of a “dark fairy tale” as this series promises to be, though I’m curious to see Detective Red in action. The English and Japanese titles promise murder mysteries for Red Riding Hood to solve, and those might be fun enough to get me invested.
The curious thing about the PV is that it only references Cinderella, and we don’t have a voice actress assigned yet. The PV does an excellent job of setting up Red Riding Hood and Pinocchio, but Pinocchio appears well after Cinderella. In fact, the first three manga chapters deal with her case. I’m curious whether the anime will change the story or timeline, or if this is just a stylistic choice to show off a potential sidekick before anyone else.

One day, she found herself forced to embark on a journey for a certain purpose.
Strangely enough, however, she kept getting swept up in incident after incident along the way.
Using her innate curiosity and clever mind, Red Riding Hood set about solving each mystery.
“Why is your criminal plan so sloppy?”
This is the world of a fairy tale everyone knows—.
Cathedral schoolmaster Egbert of Liège first recorded Little Red Riding Hood’s story sometime around the 10th century as French peasants told and retold the tale. Charles Perrault later put Little Red Riding Hood and Cinderella into literary form.
Aito Aoyagi released the original novel Red Riding Hood: A Detective Story on August 21st, 2020. Futabasha has since published four volumes. Kanoka Tana provided the art for the manga adaptation, which debuted on January 25th, 2023. Futabasha has published all four volumes in Monthly Action and Web Comic Action. Credeus’ live-action adaptation, Once upon a Crime, premiered on September 14th, 2023.
