Another isekai series has graced our screens. Villainess Level 99: I May Be the Hidden Boss but I’m Not the Demon Lord (Akuyaku Reijou Level 99: Watashi wa Ura-Boss desu ga Maou dewa Arimasen) is an incredibly long title. Henceforth, we’ll refer to the series as simply Villainess Level 99. A gamer ends up as the hidden boss of an otome game she beat before. We’ll see how well she does when the series premieres in January 2024. Until then, let’s see her darkness run wild in the trailer below.
Satori Tanabata first published this isekai tale to the user-generated website Shosetsuka ni Naro on June 15th, 2018. Fujimi Shobo acquired the publishing rights and tasked the artist Tea to adapt the series to a light novel format. This new run began on May 10th, 2019, in the Kadokawa Books imprint. Five volumes have been published thus far.
The Demon Lord is set to rise soon, and a few of the people who can stop him are as follows:
- Yumiella Dolkness — Fairouz Ai (Power in Chainsaw Man) Our isekai protagonist. She was a 20-year-old college student from Japan. Now, she is the hidden boss in a world based on an otome game.
- Alicia Ehnleit — Azumi Waki (Fina in Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear) The heroine of the otome RPG Light Magic and the Hero. She is a commoner who wields rare and powerful Light-type magic.
- Patrick Ashbatten — Yuma Uchida (Shinomori Aoshi in Rurouni Kenshin) A frontier nobleman who sees through Yumiella’s facade and works to get closer to her.
Studio Jumondou has set up a promotional home page for Villainess Level 99 and an official Twitter page. Fans and potential viewers can find character bios, behind-the-scenes information, and Key Visuals on those sites.
A Powerful Villainess Who Would Rather Live in Peace
Villainess Level 99 has a similar premise to The Most Heretical Last Boss Queen and My Next Life as a Villainess. Fortunately, Yumiella also has magic powers scaled to an RPG system, as seen in The Great Cleric and Cheat Skill in Another World. A gamer from Japan found herself in another world based on an otome game she had completed a few times in the past. However, she’s taken the role of the villainess. She’s destined for a Bad End, something even Tearmoon Empire’s protagonist wishes to avoid.
Yumiella regains her memories from her previous life at the age of five. She recalls the events of Light Magic and the Hero, also known as Hikayuu. The in-game Yumiella was a side character who bullied the main heroine, Alicia, for being a commoner at an academy for nobles. Yumiella, known for having black hair and eyes, despised features in the kingdom. She would meet her end as a hidden boss, who is even more powerful than the Demon Lord.
Yumiella did what any gamer would do to avoid her fate: she did hardcore level grinding and entered the academy at level 99. For comparison, the Demon Lord and the Captain of the Royal Knights are between levels 60 and 70. Her plans to fade into the background are undone, and she’ll take center stage to survive.
Yumiella is a powerful isekai waifu. Should anyone want to take such a girl home, J-List can help. The lovely oni girl who is more warrior than secretary Shion as a POP UP PARADE Figure is now available for purchase. Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken certainly has some nice waifus.
