The final season of Ultraman, one of the recent iterations of the giant hero from original creator Eiji Tsuburaya and his Tsuburaya Productions in 1966, is soon to premiere on May 11th, 2023. This season seeks to wrap up the rather dark tale it began to spin during the first two seasons, as is shown in the new trailer. This trailer is also available in Japanese.
Tsuburaya Productions, Production I.G., and Sola Digital Arts have been working hard on this series. They could only spin gold with three such groups at the helm. The promotional home page for Ultraman has been maintained and updated, as has the official Twitter page, not that Netflix would ever tell you. They don’t share links outside of their own. Tsuburaya Productions will share information on their Twitter page about their series, though, so they’re good to follow, too. They’ll ensure you, at least, see a key visual for the final season.
The Legacy of the Giant of Light
Many years ago, Ultraman descended into this world and merged with Shin Hayata, an agent of the SSSP (Science Special Search Party), to fight against threats to humanity. With his mission complete, he returned to his home. But his time being merged with Shin left the human with the Ultraman Factor, the power to become Ultraman himself.
Years later, Shin’s son, Shinjiro Hayata, discovered he had inhuman powers and the ability to don the Ultra Suit to become the Ultraman. However, such a life has proven difficult for him, and he struggles both as a human and a superhero. The enemies become harder to defeat, but he is eventually joined by other legendary heroes, Seven, Ace, Zoffy, Jack, and Taro, reuniting the six heroes.
In this new season, public sentiment has turned against Ultraman. His powers are going out of control, and he left devastation in his wake. During this emotionally difficult time, aliens from beyond the stars have invaded and demanded a price of half of humanity. Led by Mephisto, Alien Zarab and Valcure have come for the Ultramen.
Ultraman Origins
Ultraman began as a tokusatsu kaiju series. It also popularized the Kyodai Hero subgenre, where heroes grow very large to fight giant monsters. The first entry in the series was Ultra Q, where the “Q” stood for “Question.” That series aired from January 2nd, 1966, to December 17th, 1967, in 28 episodes.
To talk about the entirety of the Ultraman series could be its own research paper, so YouTuber Xiran Jay Zhao did a fine job in a video dedicated to the franchise.
The J-List shop has something good to offer if you are as huge an Ultraman fan as the tall superhero and want a little piece of the Giant of Light for yourself. Ultraman (“Shin Ultraman”) Nendoroid Figure is available now for pre-order.
