Oshi no Ko is unique as an idol anime series and requires a closer look for those not blinded by the dazzling lights or entranced by Ai Hoshino’s star eyes. Doga Kobo, the animation studio adapting this series, released a trailer before the April premiere, showing Ai’s pregnancy and her fun life after giving birth. Of course, her twin children — a boy and a girl — steal the show.
Doga Kobo also took the time to create a home page and official Twitter account dedicated to Oshi no Ko’s development. Behind the scenes, information is shared there, as well as great key visuals, such as the two below.
Reborn to Protect Your Idol
Oshi no Ko features Ai Hoshino, an incredibly popular idol, with legions of fans singing her praises. As much as she enjoys her work, upon discovering she is pregnant, she leaves the spotlight and travels to a hospital in the Tokyo countryside. Her doctor happens to be Gorou Amemiya, a skilled physician who happens to be one of her devoted fans. Of course, he maintains his professionalism and promises to safely deliver her children.
Tragedy struck, and Gorou was struck down by an obsessed stalker with an unhealthy attachment to Ai. He and Sarina Tendouji, another of Gorou’s patients, a terminally ill girl with dreams of being an idol, gained a second chance at life as Ai’s twin children. Gorou, now Aquamarine, and Sarina, now Ruby, were quick to take to their new lives and promised to protect Ai from whatever misfortune might visit her.
Oshi no Ko also deals with the darker aspects of the entertainment industry, specifically the idol industry. When Aqua and Ruby follow in Ai’s footsteps, they might confront stalkers (such as the one that hunted their mother), anonymous online harassment and death threats (which could push someone to do something that can’t be undone), and a cutthroat industry full of people willing to do what it takes to get ahead.
Oshi no Ko’s Origins
Oshi no Ko first took to the stage as a manga series written by Aka Akasaka and illustrated by Mengo Yokoyari. Shueisha took up publishing the idol manga, and the series began printing on April 23rd, 2020, with ten volumes out so far for fans to pick up and read.
