About a week ago, the rumor mill started whispering about a new project that was set to be announced by studio BONES within the next few days. All we knew for certain was that it was a project that would be animated by BONES and directed by Hiroko Utsumi (Kyoto Animation’s Free! franchise). Finally, the day has arrived when we can report on what those rumors were hinting at.
According to tweets sent out by Aniplex of America on Sunday, September 20th, the new project will be a skateboarding anime titled SK8 the Infinity. We don’t have a whole lot of details to share with you regarding the project, but we do have the first promotional video and a scheduled release window of January 2021!

In addition to this, we can also confirm a few additional crew members; Ichiro Okouchi will oversee the scripts and Michinori Chiba will provide the anime character designs. Ryo Takahashi will compose the background music.
Anime News Network describes the plot of the SK8 the Infinity series as:
The anime centers on Reki, a second-year high school student who loves skateboarding, and gets caught up in “S,” an underground and dangerous skateboard race at an abandoned mine with no rules. Ranga, who has returned to Japan from Canada and has never skateboarded before, also gets wrapped up in S along with Reki. Dirty racers, AI racers, and other unique individuals compete in the “youth skateboard race battle.”
What makes this anime sound exciting is the fact that skateboarding has, as far as I’m aware, never been the subject of a “sports” anime before. Add in the fact that the director and studio both have experience with high-intensity stories and you have the makings for something special. I’m already looking forward to this series!
