One reason we all love JAV is because of how creative it is. While Western porn is showing secretaries with fake boobs giving “dictation” to their bosses while a wild saxophone plays, Japan’s adult video industry makes movies that are so creative and fun to watch, there’s something for every type of fan. In this article, I’m going to rank the 11 most interesting “concept JAV” series, which are built around a unique idea (kikaku in Japanese) and then filmed quickly and cheaply.

What is Kikaku JAV?
In the interview J-List did with former JAV actress Kaho Shibuya, we learned that there are three kinds of JAVs. These are:
- 女優系 joyu-kei, or actress-focused. The actress is marketed by the agency that manages her career and is the main focus of a video release. As her popularity fades, she’ll appear less frequently as the star of a single release and more often in compilation JAV titles that give you 8, 12 or sometimes 24 hours of performances for a low price.
- 企画 kikaku, meaning concept or planning. These are JAVs built around an idea, like anime parody cosplay, stopping time so you could grope girls as much as you wanted, or girls poking their heads out of a bus talking to people passing by while getting fucked inside the bus.
- 素人 shirouto, or amateur. These are any JAVs that hire actresses to appear in one-off productions, for example, Sex at a Rainy Bus Stop4 Hours. Their names are never known.
The progenitor of all concept JAVs is Soft on Demand, which created the category of “indie JAV” when they started operations in 2005. The company was founded by Ganari Takahashi, a former media executive. He wanted to make pornography that was so creative and unique that everyone would want to watch. He aimed to make SOD the “McDonald’s of adult entertainment” so that SOD would become a household name. And he certainly succeeded.
Sometimes a unique concept JAV idea can fall flat on its face, like the time SOD dressed two girls up as bishounen boys, gave them fake penises, and had them have pretend gay sex together. On the other hand, when a really creative kikaku lands with fans, it can be glorious. One of the best examples of this is the Magic Mirror series. This features a mobile JAV studio that can go anywhere, allowing performers to have sex protected by a “magic mirror” (one-way glass)

Would You Enter the Men’s Hot Springs Bath With Only a Towel?
One of the most popular ideas SOD came up with was this series that asks a girl if she will take a single small towel and walk into the men’s bathing area, allowing them to grope her and have sex with her. The series started off with no-name actresses, but these days the series features famous names like Momona Koibuchi and Akari Matsunaga.

The Top Kikaku JAV: Magic Mirror Mobile JAV Studio
One of the most popular examples of a concept JAV that became a huge hit, perhaps second only to “that pool” in terms of recognizability by fans around the world. Basically it’s a specially-designed truck with a filming set in the back, and windows that allow us to see out, but people on the outside can’t see in. So you can have sex as much as you like inside, with normal people passing by not noticing. In the above example, a man is given money if he can correctly identify which pussy belongs to his girlfriend while blindfolded.

The whole point of kikaku JAV is for someone to have a creative idea that presents pornography in a fresh and new way to fans, then bring it to market quickly. SOD has decided to experiment with AI, making a beautiful Japanese actress into an actual elf, who is graceful and beautiful as she has sex. I know many J-List customers aren’t fans of AI, but some of the products we’ve been getting on the site are quite amazing.

Lesbian JAV from Japan Is Insane!
Even I’m often surprised at the creativity of lesbian JAV titles. Girls groping other girls inside a train. Girls groping other girls in a public bath. Lesbians pinching each other’s nipples secretly while working together in a company. Lesbians wearing “penis bands” (strap-on dildos) and acting like men. It’s crazy and fun!

This is another great example of a kikaku JAV idea from Soft on Demand. They designed a bicycle with a see-through seat and a dildo that moves up and down through the action of pedaling. Great Kikaku JAV of the Past
As insane as the current crop of concept JAV titles J-List stocks is, the Golden Age of kikaku JAV concepts has long passed. Here are some we’ve sold over the years:
- The Zenra (“full nude”) series, the only remnant of which are the Zenra Airline titles, which are likely out of print and will disappear from the site soon, or one-off titles like SOD Female Employee Zenra Cleaning. In the past we got Zenra Day at Work, in which female SOD employees had to work naked that day. Zenra Sports Day. Zenra Figure Skating, which actually got the company in a bit of trouble. They even did a fully nude production of Swan Lake.
- The Tekoki Hospital series. This featured hospitalized men who needed sexy nurses to jerk them off (tekoki) to get better. The series placed emphasis on the professionalism of the “nurse” as they harvested their patients’ sperm.
- “Sex bus” videos used to be quite popular, and you’d see JAV studios creating a “Fan Thanks Tour” in which actual JAV fans would get sexually serviced by their favorite actresses inside a bus. These largely went away due to legal issues.
- CFNM — clothed female, nude male — used to be a huge category. The women would keep their clothes on and engage in チンチン研究 chin chin kenkyu, or “penis research.”
- The Deep Kiss series. This was where SOD got its start. They would basically stop pairs of female friends walking down the street and offer them money if they’d engage in a “deep kiss” (a tongue kiss) on camera. We probably sold more than a thousand of this series on VHS back in the day.
